Tuesday transformation...me and Guy! Yesterday was a bit special. Apart from it being a day of strikes in #brussels (again, really?) I was lucky enough to be invited to an intimate Q&A session with Guy Verhofstadt, the former prime minister of Belgium and liberal #MEP who was speaking at my co-working club #themerode. Mr Verhofstadt is perhaps most famous for his stance on creating a federal Europe. Every #belgian I speak to tells me that he advocates for a #europeanarmy. He does. But he also advocates for EU #transformation on a macro scale - to reform a flaccid institution and to reinvigorate Europe's position within the #macropolitical environment by streamlining regulatory powers so we remain competitive and able to innovate. Which got me thinking... 1. This is not an assignment I would like! Mainly because I lack the patience to sit on my hands while my clients spend decades deliberating! On average an EU trade agreement takes 28 months, but many are longer in the making. Throw a healthy dose of vested interests into the mix and it would be like stirring concrete. I'm far more of a 'get-in-and-get-it done' kind of woman. 2. This is an assignment I would like! Diverse stakeholders, knotty organisational problems, a change programme that has real-world consequences. In 2021, the EU represented 15.2 percent of the world GDP, second to the US and China. Imagine what we could do if we doubled that figure by streamlining our efforts to ignite #innovation. 3. Doing what you've always done guarantees the same result. This didn't serve the dinosaurs and it won't serve us. The EU as it was envisaged in 1957 now faces a landscape that is very different from post-war world order that prevailed at that time. Making decisions based on outdated institutional values is a recipe for stagnation. It takes courage to transform.
