Threats, danger, peril, hazards and subsequent risk(s) are never simple, straight-forward or ultimately reducible to universal mathematical calculations or forumulas because nobody perceives 'risk' in precisely the same way, at the same time or consistently over their lifetime. "Each of the factors listed below can significantly affect the perception of risk, and each functions against a complex backdrop of social and cultural values. " - WHO (2005). Effective Media Communication During Public Health Emergencies: A WHO Handbook, World Health Organisations (WHO). pp.110 Not surprisingly, community and culture further attenuate risk cognition, perception, values, morals and norms. This means that knowledge, awareness, media and disclosure may alter risk levels (emic & etic) over time at differing speeds. Safety and security 'risks' are no different. Moreover, personal safety and security factors may not only amplify risk perception but also trigger considerable emotion and even physical responses. Remember this, each and every time you see a 'risk' number, rating, scale or numerical value seemingly universally applied to every person on the planet. How do you incorporate or accommodate alternate and disparate risk views? Who exactly are you representing with your 'risk' calculation or view? if we are to poll 10 people locally and globally, would we get a consistent or similar view? Or is life, complexity, people, adversaries (threats), and behaviour just reduced and represented by fast and simple maths and calculations? How do you perceive this article and information?
