As these innovations reshape our world, lawmakers and regulators are racing to keep up. Some recent examples: - The EU AI Act, set to take effect in August 2024, and applicable in August 2026, creates a risk-based framework for regulating AI systems - from banning "unacceptable risk" applications to transparency requirements for chatbots.  Link: https://lnkd.in/euGfjvqx - Colorado passed the first law protecting "mental privacy", recognizing the need to safeguard our thoughts and neural data as brain-computer interfaces advance. Researchers have achieved over 40% accuracy in decoding thoughts into text, raising both exciting possibilities and privacy concerns. Neurotechnology raises privacy risks. Sensitive brain data, like thoughts and memories, could be misused by insurers, law enforcement, advertisers, or governments. However, as neuroscientist Nita Farahany notes, we're entering an era of "brain transparency" that will transform workplaces, healthcare, and human relationships. 2024 Update on OECD AI Principles On May 3, 2024, the OECD updated its AI Principles to address the latest developments in AI technology, focusing on privacy, safety, and information integrity. With 47 nations including the EU on board, these principles guide global AI policies, emphasizing innovation, safety, and human rights. Key updates include: - Strengthened safety measures to address AI risks. - Enhanced focus on countering misinformation. - Commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible business conduct throughout the AI lifecycle. OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann highlighted these principles as a global benchmark for AI policy, fostering international collaboration and adapting to technological advancements.
