A first impression involves a lot; how you look, what you say, what you don't say. Unfortunately, we can't pick and choose what people focus on when interacting with us in conversation. (Should we all make 'how to communicate with me' guides?) But we can control what information is presented when someone is first using an app or website. Have you ever ‘rage quit’ an app, or bounced off a website because of unclear information, or an assumed steep learning curve? I’ve done it. Have you left an app or site because it looked outdated or cumbersome? I’m guilty of it too. There’s a debate on whether “UI” is as important as UX. Sorry, they’re forever connected and depend on each other. In a recent article by Darrielle Evans, I shared my experience with using storyboards to strategize an ideal path, tooltips and alerts to make information clear, and why the UI should be as practical as your research and user flows. Lesser-Known UX Laws to Level Up User Experience Beyond the best-known UX principles, there exist some lesser-known "laws" that can take your game to the next level in design. Let's take a look at a few of these with real-world examples to bring them into reality: 𝗔𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰-𝗨𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 Users tend to see beautiful designs as more usable—even if they’re not! Imagine filling out a form on a sleek, well-designed website versus a cluttered, outdated one. Even if both forms are equally complex, the well-designed one feels simpler, encouraging users to stick with it. Beauty can literally make UX feel easier. 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝘄 (𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆) Some things just are complicated, and only so much can be simplified. Consider filing your taxes online: you can make the form look pretty or provide tooltips or guidance, but taxes are taxes-there's a certain inherent complexity. What is the goal here for UX? Reduce perceived complexity by making each step as clear and visually light as possible. 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗸-𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 Users remember an experience based on the peak (best or worst part) and the end. Imagine a food delivery app that’s glitchy but ends with a delightful confirmation screen showing a “Thank you!” and a real-time map of your order on the way. That positive ending can improve overall satisfaction. Designing the end experience thoughtfully really matters. 𝗩𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗳𝗳 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 (𝗜𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁) When people see a bunch of similar items, the one that stands out is remembered best. Think of a subscription page where only the “Pro Plan” is highlighted in a bright color. The contrast grabs attention and subtly nudges users to consider that option first. 𝗗𝗼𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 This law states that when the system response is under 400 ms, users feel engaged and in control. Quick, responsive design can give users a sense of flow and satisfaction. Have you noticed how some chat apps respond immediately with an animation or status icon? This feedback keeps users engaged, preventing that dreaded feeling of “is this thing even working?” These “hidden” UX principles can turn a good experience into a great one.
