What can Germany do to catch up with the US when it comes to innovation? I was asked by German news outlet Handelsblatt to comment a recent paper published by the German expert commission for innovation, which says (to nobody’s surprise) that Germany is in high risk of falling behind when it comes to AI compared to the US and China. I see some of the biggest differences in the investor landscape. The US benefits from institutional investors and pension funds that are allowed to contribute significantly to venture capital. The US also has stronger ties between research and industry. Furthermore, for decades Silicon Valley has managed to turn founders/entrepreneurs into investors — a compounding effect that drives more innovation. Despite the current political mess that Germany finds itself in, there are potentially big opportunities for tech vendors (and by extension marketers) across the region. I attended a fascinating event last week that provided an insight into how Germany is trying to transition from its traditional position as Europe’s manufacturing powerhouse into the region’s leading Tech / AI hub. This ‘reindustrialisation’ from legacy sectors to new tech is being aided by huge investment - the best example of which is the building of a new AI hub in Heilbronn (no, me neither). Other sectors are also seeing big upturns in funding – Pharma, Robotics, Auto EV and Renewable Energies are just a few. This ongoing expansion is to a large degree government-proof, as much of the investment is coming from private equity and / or VC sectors. This means that there will be huge opportunities for tech vendors looking to expand into the German market over the coming months / years, as new start-ups look to scale as quickly as they can – regardless of who’s in the Bundesregierung. We had the honor of attending the Generalitat de Catalunya’s presentation of #Semiconductors and Chips Alliance and the Industrial Boost Strategy, formed by the Departament d'Economia i Hisenda, Treball. Departament d'Empresa i Treball and Departament de Recerca i Universitats along with Mr. Roger Torrent i Ramió, Minister of Business and Labor, Ms. Natàlia Mas Guix, Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Joaquim Nadal, Minister of Research and Universities, Oriol Alcoba Malaspina, Director General of Industry and the Secretary of Digital Policies Gina Tost i Faus. 🧠 We have been one of the key contributors in defining the strategy to boost the semiconductor industry, especially in the emerging segment of quantum chips. Our CEO Marta P Estarellas was one of the four speakers at the event, along with Oriol Alcoba Malaspina, Director General of Industry, Roger Espasa, CEO of Semidynamics, Montse Guardia Guell from IDEADED, and Jose Antonio Garrido from the Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2). She highlighted, among other things, the need for internationalization, something we have focused on since our foundation. 🚀 We would like to highlight two significant initiatives by the Generalitat de Catalunya in this alliance. First, Innofab, a forthcoming 2,000 m² clean room for new materials to be installed at UAB Research Park, funded by the PERTE program and the Generalitat, is now underway and will serve as a crucial infrastructure for companies like ours. 🇩🇪 🚨 Bureaucracy Costs Germany €146 Billion Annually According to a recent study by the ifo Institute – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Germany loses up to €146 billion in economic output each year due to excessive bureaucracy, which are more than double previous estimates. The Normenkontrollrat had previously calculated €65 billion annually in direct costs alone. Key findings from the Ifo study: - The €146 billion figure reflects both direct + indiret costs arising from bureaucratic inefficiencies. - The study emphasizes that the costs of inaction are enormous, urging immediate reforms. - The report highlights the need for streamlining administrative processes to reduce economic losses and improve business efficiency. 💡 It's clear that reducing red tape is crucial for unlocking Germany's full economic potential! My View? 🥊 we have to get this money back! 👻 our recent experience: we “relocated” a startup from Silicon Valley / US to Germany and from Cologne to Rhine-Main area … even BEFORE we could do anything ... notary, registration courts, chamber of commerce (IHK), GEZ!!! + other "robber barons" came and collected a lot of money from us. The Economist titles ‚how kaput is Germany?‘. Does it really have to be this way? It was heartening to see the Munich Circle (Münchner Kreis) publish its study on #deeptech in Germany. Over 300 experts from academia and business had a look at the country and its potential to develop into a deep tech giant. The good news: it’s all there! The education systems, sciences, the business and the economic base. #Germany is a sleeping giant. But how to wake it up? The state and businesses need to feel more comfortable with risk and showing initiative. But most of all we need to realise that we need to move our economic model for the 21st century. The German engineer of the past built the worlds best cars. In the future they will need to build AI models, rockets and biolabs! 📲
