AI & Ethics have become increasingly critical as artificial intelligence permeates every aspect of our lives. I’ve been part of a women’s book club founded by Dr. Lindsey Jarrett, where we've explored insightful reads like "Weapons of Math Destruction" by Cathy O'Neil. This book, which I first encountered during my AI & Ethics class in my Data Science Master’s program at University of Wisconsin, sheds light on the dangers of unchecked algorithms. In the realm of Data Science, leaders like Dr. Lindsey Jarrett, Dr. Carla Gentry, Dr. Jan Beger, Dr. Timnit Gebru, and many others are pushing the boundaries of AI ethics, raising awareness about the unintended consequences of algorithms. Today, with misinformation and disinformation rampant, the lines between facts and lies are increasingly blurred. This makes it even more important to have conversations about the ethical implications of AI. How do we ensure that AI systems are used responsibly? How do we prevent AI from perpetuating biases or making decisions that could harm individuals or communities, especially when models are trained on data from websites and other open sources? These are the questions that we, as data scientists, must grapple with. The impact of AI on society is profound, and it is our responsibility to build ethical frameworks that prioritize transparency, fairness, and accountability.
