World Day Against Child Labour Did you know that around the world, there are 160 million children in child labour! That is almost one out of ten children worldwide. Nearly half of them perform hazardous work that directly endangers their health, safety or moral development. In Uganda, the National Labour Force Report 2021, indicated that 6.2 million (40%) of 15.7 million children in the country aged 5-17years have been involved in child labour excluding household chores. The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development observes this years World Day Against Child Labour under the theme: “Let us Act Now on our Commitments: End Child Labour!”. #EnablingChange

Bangladesh's Child Labour Situation: A Critical Overview The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics survey reveals a grim reality: around 1.78 million children are ensnared in child labour, with 1.07 million engaged in hazardous work. This surge from 2013 figures underscores a pressing issue. The hazardous work, predominantly in urban areas, poses severe risks to children's physical and mental well-being. Tragically, many receive meagre compensation, perpetuating cycles of poverty and depriving them of educational opportunities. Urgent government action, as underscored by officials, is imperative to eradicate this blight by 2025. Concerted efforts, encompassing policy reforms and societal awareness, are paramount to securing a brighter future for Bangladesh's youth. #childlabour #childprotection

In this article, I emphasize the critical need for implementing living wages, specially with 38.3% of the population living below the poverty line and inflation rates on the rise in #pakistan . The Living Tariff Tool, developed by the WageIndicator Foundation and GIZ Pakistan for the informal sector (mainly gig workers), offers a comprehensive solution by facilitating the calculation of living wages. Its real-time updates enable individuals to make informed decisions in the face of economic fluctuations. Collaboration among government, academia, and industry is essential in ensuring fair compensation and fostering sustainable development. #livingwage #government #sdg8 #sdg1 #inflation #mpi #poverty #gigeconomy #freelancer #gigworker #decentwork #ilo #pakistan

Social Justice for All. End Child Labour! Observed on June 12th, World Day Against Child Labour is intended to serve as a catalyst for the growing worldwide movement against child labour. Since 2000, the world had been making steady progress in reducing child labour. But over the past few years, conflicts, crises and the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and wealth inequality have plunged more families into poverty – and forced millions more children into child labour. Economic growth has not been sufficient, nor inclusive enough, to relieve the pressure that too many families and communities feel and that makes them resort to child labour. Today, 160 million children are still engaged in child labour. That is almost one in ten children worldwide!!!! Africa ranks highest among regions both in the percentage of children in child labour — one-fifth — and the absolute number of children in child labour — 72 million. Asia and the Pacific ranks second highest in both these measures — 7% of all children and 62 million in absolute terms are in child labour in this region. The Africa and the Asia and the Pacific regions together account for almost nine out of every ten children in child labour worldwide. The remaining child labour population is divided among the Americas (11 million), Europe and Central Asia (6 million), and the Arab States (1 million). In terms of incidence, 5% of children are in child labour in the Americas, 4% in Europe and Central Asia, and 3% in the Arab States. While the percentage of children in child labour is highest in low-income countries, their numbers are actually greater in middle-income countries. 9% all children in lower-middle-income countries, and 7% of all children in upper-middle-income countries, are in child labour. Child labour can be eliminated, if the root causes are addressed. More than ever, it is urgent for all of us to contribute to bringing solutions to people’s daily problems, and child labour is – possibly – the most visible of them all. The World Day Against Child Labour must be a critical moment for all of us to demonstrate that change can be achieved when will and determination come together and provide a momentum for efforts to be accelerated in a situation of great urgency. #endchildlabor #childlabor #socialjustice #protectourchildren

"Let's act on our commitments: End Child Labour" is the theme of World Day Against Child Labour 2024. The International Labour Organization designated June 12 for this day. Its objective is to spark the growing global movement against child labour. In the UN Sustainable Development Goals, it has been agreed that child labour should be eliminated by next year 2025 (SDG 8.7). Around the globe, 168 million children engage in child labour. The term 'child labour' refers to when children are too young to work, or do work that is too hard or too dangerous for them, and this work prevents them from receiving a proper or any education. Due to the lack of education, for example, child labour hampers the development of individual children and of society as a whole. This means child labour is not only a consequence of poverty, it is also a significant cause. As the Netherlands we also contribute to end child labour worldwide and made it possible for entrepreneurs and business to also contribute to this goal through the Fund against Child Labour. With this subsidy projects have been financed aimed at Due Diligence (OECD Guidelines) and local multistakeholder projects on (production) location. So far 4 projects have been subsidized in Uganda: * Uganda coffee communities: promoting child education * Addressing child labour in ASM goldmines * Improving children's education and youth employment * Rwenzori Education, Livelihoods and Gender project More information on these projects can be found on: https://lnkd.in/ejBckf7P #WorldDayAgainstChildLabour #WDACL #EndChildLabour

June 12 is World Day Against Child Labour. According to the International Labour Organisation, child labour is any form of activity or work that deprives children of their childhood, potential, and dignity, and is harmful to their physical and mental development. It refers to work that is mentally, physically, socially, or morally dangerous and harmful to children, and/or interferes with their schooling. Children in conflict communities are most exposed to child labour because of their situation. Many organisations that claim to have intervention plans for such children come to take them from their communities with the promise of enrolling them in schools in the cities, but often subject them to hard labour in construction sites and in other domestic activities. While there are activities that help children become productive in society, exposing minors to long work hours and harsh conditions, and depriving them of personal development, is what stakeholders frown upon. What is your take on child labour? Here is one of my reports on this https://lnkd.in/d7u6i3Jf

Whilst policymakers often discuss poverty, they rarely connect it with poor-quality employment. How could a multidimensional measure of poor-quality employment help us best understand deprivation in labour market? ✍ #LSEPPR authors Kirsten Sehnbruch, Mauricio Apablaza and James Foster for LSE European Politics and Policy / LSE Blogs.
