January 20 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The legacy of Dr. King is about more than fighting injustice, it is about the power of collective action, finding strength in our diversity, and the importance of building bridges to create a more just and compassionate world. At the heart of Dr. King's vision was the belief that no single individual can accomplish the work of justice and equity alone. True progress requires many people coming together, working passionately and tirelessly toward a common goal. Together, we are greater than the sum of our parts. Most people associate the late Martin Luther King Jr. with his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. However, my favorite speech is his last Sunday sermon, "Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution," delivered four days before his assassination. Did you know that? If you haven't had the chance to listen to it, consider setting aside an hour to do so. The message remains powerful and relevant even 50 years later. Two of my favorite lines from the sermon are: "We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools" and "It's all right to tell a man to lift himself by his own bootstraps, but it is a cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps." These powerful messages and the sermon are among the many reasons I work as hard as I do, especially today, to honor his legacy. As a 40-year-old entrepreneur who also happens to be African American, it's an incredible feeling to lead an organization with incredibly employees and work with clients from diverse races, religious beliefs, and nationalities, all working together to create a more positive and effective healthcare system for everyone.
