Cybersecurity Insight: The Insider Threat In a startling parallel to the world of cybersecurity, the recent sentencing of a former U.S. diplomat, Manuel Rocha, for espionage on behalf of Cuba, underscores the critical importance of vigilance against insider threats. Just as Rocha's covert operations went undetected for decades within the U.S. foreign service, organizations today face similar vulnerabilities from within. Insider threats in cybersecurity can be equally as damaging as any external attack. These are not always malicious; sometimes they stem from negligence or lack of awareness. However, when intent is involved, the results can be catastrophic, affecting not just IT infrastructure but the very fabric of an organization. This case serves as a reminder: Whether it’s a government or a tech startup, the risk is real. Regular audits, robust access controls, and continuous monitoring are essential. Discussion on the Resurgence of Terror Attacks in North East Nigeria on Channels Television On January 16, 2025, I appeared on Channels Television's flagship breakfast show, #MorningBrief to shed light on the concerning resurgence of attacks in North-East Nigeria. It was an opportunity to provide strategic insights and advocate for a more effective approach to counter-terrorism in our country. During the discussion, I emphasised the critical need for a stratified counter-terrorism strategy that balances kinetic and non-kinetic approaches. This includes leveraging military action while addressing the root causes of insecurity, such as governance gaps and socio-economic vulnerabilities. Equally important is achieving synergy between the federal and subnational governments and securing the vital buy-in of the people for lasting peace. Accountability in security governance also remains a pressing issue. As was shown in Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, Nigeria Security Report December 2024, our analytical tools had flagged the risk of this resurgence long before it unfolded. We reached out to key coordinating elements within the security sector, but regrettably, no action was taken. Today, the consequences of that inaction are measured in lives lost. I used this platform to call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly to prioritise accountability within public security governance. Nigeria cannot afford to overlook lapses that endanger lives, nor can we continue to ignore the voices advocating for proactive and evidence-based security measures. Together, we must ensure a safer and more secure Nigeria for all. I welcome further conversations and collaboration on this urgent matter.
