Last Thursday and Friday, I had the privilege of attending and speaking in a panel OECD GFTech's most recent event: "The Human Future: What's on the Horizon?" at their beautiful Paris headquarters. I am deeply grateful to the OECD - OCDE for inviting Girls in Quantum, thus providing a platform for the next generation to learn from and partake in critical discussions on the future avenues and potential of technology. The OECD Global Forum on Technology brings together the world’s leading innovators and forward-thinking policymakers to explore the opportunities and risks of emerging technologies. It fosters inclusive, values-based discussions to align the development and use of cutting-edge technologies with democratic principles and human rights. As a student, it was truly insightful to hear from such a diverse array of speakers, each bringing unique perspectives as technology continues to evolve. Every conversation I had with the delegates was incredibly valuable, and connecting with so many brilliant individuals who are passionate about the future has left me feeling optimistic and excited about what lies ahead! A heartfelt thank you to the OECD GFTech team for their hard work and dedication in curating such an impactful event. The European Commission published a foresight report on the future of Big Tech in Europe, focusing on implications for research and innovation (R&I). The publication follows a scenario-based approach, from which it draws different conclusions formulating policy recommendations concerning the EU’s R&I policy. The policy brief projects scenarios as far as 2040. The report then presents four different scenarios, showing how some current trends around Big Tech could develop over the next two decades. These scenarios are presented without any reference to desirability or likelihood, solely serving as strategic habitats for deriving policy options. This approach aims to show how EU policies might have to be changed to avoid or anticipate some of the outcomes described in the respective scenarios. The main conclusions of this report, outlined as policy recommendations cross cutting all scenarios mentioned, are that the European Union must prioritise developing its own tech leaders alongside regulatory efforts. The report suggests benchmarking EU and national R&I budgets against both historical performance and strategies employed by global tech giants. It further emphasises the need for significant ‘big bet’ investments in Europe, coupled with an experimental approach fostering serendipitous breakthroughs in technology and research. #forsight #futures #BigTech #scenarios #Innovation #policy

Today, I spent an enlightening day immersed in discussions about the future of public administration 🔮 in our rapidly evolving technological ecosystem at the GovTech Forum in Milan. One argument, in particular, struck a chord with me, echoing in my thoughts long after the sessions concluded. It's about our choice of language in the realm of public policy and smart cities 🏙️. We've been speaking in codes and algorithms, in data and efficiency metrics. But have we forgotten the human element? The essence of technology is not in its complexity but in its ability to simplify, to enhance human experiences and emotions. Yet, our rhetoric remains largely inaccessible, shrouded in the jargon of bits and bytes. We talk of smart cities as if they're distant, futuristic concepts, rather than communities where people live, dream, and connect 💡. Imagine the possibilities if we shifted our narrative. What if we spoke of technology in terms of stories and experiences, of emotions and everyday life? Moreover it was a huge pleasure to connect with many likeminded people and friends from across Europe. Catching up with them and hearing about their trajectory to bring positive change to the public sector is boosting my energy.
