It was wonderful to see Safe Screens’ Arabella Hastie on the Neil Oliver show on GB News last Sunday night. The interview was packed with valuable insights, especially on a question we frequently encounter: Should parents manage their child’s smartphone usage on their own, or should the government be involved? Or as Neil Oliver simply put it: Should parents just be taking the phones away from kids? Arabella highlighted that it’s nearly impossible for parents to manage their teenager’s smartphone usage by themselves. Without a smartphone, teenagers often feel excluded from their social circles. We need collective action to effectively address this issue. Arabella also raised concerns about the Online Safety Act, which falls short of its intended goals. This is why Safe Screens has proposed alternative solutions focused on smartphone use and licensing rather than relying solely on the Online Safety Act. From authenticator apps to MitID, our lives are so tied to these little screens. It made me reflect: 👉🏽 📲 We can’t avoid phones anymore - society is becoming more digital whether we like it or not. It’s no surprise - smartphone usage has skyrocketed by 83% since 2020, and it’s forecasted to hit 6.2 billion users by 2029. Some might see this as a negative. But let’s also acknowledge the positives: 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 👉🏽 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞.⁣⁣ I love how one small screen lets you manage so much, so quickly. And when you can’t access it? 👉🏽 Maybe take it as a rare opportunity to unplug and embrace the silence - until you get it fixed. Just my reflection.
