A joint study prepared by the Real Property Association of Canada (REALPAC), the CAGBC | Canada Green Building Council, and the PLACE Centre calls for concerted action to accelerate the process of decarbonizing commercial buildings in Canada. "The commercial real estate industry is ready to lead, but success will depend on strong partnerships across government, utilities, tenants, the appraisal community, financial institutions, and the private sector," Michael Brooks, CEO of REALPAC, said in a release. His remarks were echoed by Thomas Mueller, president and CEO of CAGBC: "This report provides a clear roadmap for aligning government incentives, leveraging innovative technologies, and driving market demand to achieve net-zero emissions at scale." "Decarbonizing Canada's buildings is not just an environmental imperative but an economic opportunity. By addressing these barriers, we can create jobs, drive innovation and position Canada as a leader in the future low-carbon economy," Mike Moffatt, PhD, founding director of the PLACE Centre, said in a release. #greenbuildings #sustainability #decarbonization #commercialrealestate #Canada https://lnkd.in/ecFrCVJD

Halifax Mayor Mike Savage has emphasized the critical need for Nova Scotia to adopt the 2020 National Building Code and National Energy Code to meet net-zero carbon emissions targets by 2030. At The Housing Trust of Nova Scotia, we recognize that postponing the adoption of these new building codes doesn't just affect environmental progress; it also challenges the ability to ensure long-term affordable and sustainable housing within the province. Adopting these codes is crucial for improving energy security, lowering living costs, and ensuring sustainable housing for Nova Scotians. As we renovate buildings that are nearly 50 years old, we are committed to both environmental sustainability and the preservation of affordable rents. Our focus remains on making our buildings more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible as we continue our work in affordable housing. #HTNS #SustainableHousing #EnvironmentalResponsibility #AffordableHousing https://lnkd.in/dyDKMgSy

Exciting News for Energy Savings and Sustainability in BC! The Province of British Columbia has launched the CleanBC Multi-Unit Residential Building Retrofit Program, a game-changer for apartments, condos, and co-ops! This program is designed to: ✅ Save on energy bills with whole-building retrofits. ✅ Support the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy with incentives for heat pumps, LED lighting, better windows, and ventilation. ✅ Provide funding for electrical upgrades, making energy-efficient solutions more accessible. 💡 The Impact: A 65-unit rental building could save $16,250 per year by switching to heat pumps. A 130-suite condo could save $18,000 per year by replacing electric baseboards with heat pumps. With $61 million in funding over three years, including contributions from BC Hydro and the Province, this initiative empowers building owners, strata councils, and co-op boards to embrace energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Why This Matters: Energy efficiency is one of the most cost-effective ways to meet future energy demand while lowering costs for residents. Programs like this ensure a sustainable, comfortable, and affordable future for all British Columbians. 👏 Hats off to organizations like Landlord BC, Wesgroup, and the City of Vancouver for leading the charge in sustainability and helping us all move toward a net-zero future! Let’s work together to build a cleaner, greener, and more efficient BC. #CleanBC #EnergyEfficiency #Sustainability #BuildingRetrofits #BCGreenEnergy
