We should be grateful every day for the technology that makes our lives easier. When researching for this article, I thought about the poor students back in the day and what they had to endure when attending online courses. I also remember in the 2010s, when I was a student and using the popular LMS Blackboard, how frustrated I got from time to time when I couldn't submit my homework or tests. Here at LAVT, we have a super-fast LMS with a sleek design that helps students enjoy the learning process. #elearning #digitalcourse #onlinelearning
❓❓❓ DID YOU KNOW ❓❓❓ Imagine prepping for a class in 1986, but instead of lugging heavy textbooks 📚, you're dialing up on your clunky computer 💻 . Believe it or not, online courses were a thing even back then, with the University of Toronto pioneering the way. Back in those days, though, things were rough around the edges. 😫 Forget fancy video lectures or interactive quizzes – learning often happened through clunky bulletin boards or basic email exchanges. Then came 1996, a game-changer for online education. A group of computer science professors at the University of British Columbia had a vision: an "online blackboard" packed with tools to make learning more engaging. They called it WebCT, the first Learning Management System (LMS). Think of it as the Netflix of education – a platform that organized learning materials, delivered lectures, and even facilitated discussions, all in one virtual space. WebCT was a smash hit. Universities everywhere saw the potential for a more streamlined and engaging online learning experience. This was just the beginning. LMS went from strength to strength, adding features like: 👉 Threaded discussions: No more online conversations feeling like a jumbled mess. Threaded discussions allowed students to follow conversation threads and respond directly, fostering a more organized learning community. 👉Automated grading: Goodbye, late nights spent wading through mountains of essays! LMS started offering automated grading tools for multiple-choice questions and quizzes, freeing up instructors' time for more personalized feedback. 👉Mobile compatibility: The rise of smartphones and tablets meant learning could happen anywhere, anytime. LMS platforms adapted, allowing students to access course materials and participate in discussions on the go. Today's LMS platforms are a far cry from WebCT's early days. They're packed with features like interactive video lectures, gamified learning experiences, and even tools that use artificial intelligence to personalize the learning path for each student. The evolution of LMS has been revolutionary, transforming online education from a clunky experiment into a powerful and engaging way to learn. #LMS #learningmanagementsystem #digitalcourse #usa #highschools

This article hits home way harder than I expected. But that just underlies the import the message. When you consider how much time is lost in the classroom because the damn website won’t load or the intercom confusing, you realize why so many teachers are skeptical about new technologies! In the Ed space, if your offering isn’t user friendly for a sleep deprived teenager with adhd who forgot to eat bread is distracted by their attractive classmate two rows over, it isn’t really user friendly!
Looking for ways to get back your instructional time? Be sure to check out this byline "Reclaiming Lost Instructional Time" in EdTech Digest from Steven Harmon to understand how how edtech has the potential to restore lost minutes of instruction and overcome distraction.
