From Board to Ward…….my sentiments and empathy for night shift workers stems back to my childhood, seeing how my mom worked nights as a mental health nurse. So in my Non Exec role I felt emotional and extremely honoured to do my first night site visit with our CNO @Lisa Stanley-Green. It was a fabulous opportunity to be in the presence of on duty night staff in our inpatient wards BSMHFT Comms . It was also inspiring to see our Trust #Values being lived in practice, as I engaged with the staff and heard about the #Compassion shown to service users when they’ve been in distress. I witnessed the #Inclusion of a diverse workforce that reflected the demographics of our service users being cared for and I saw the #Commitment and dedication of the ward managers and their teams, staying beyond their shift to ensure colleagues and service users feel supported and safe to receive the best care. This visit for me was more than a site visit, it was about “visible leadership”. Leadership is not just about staff being able to see me, it’s more importantly, that they also know that I see them. That I respect the work they do and I appreciate that they leave their homes and families each night to provide care to vulnerable adults with mental health illness.
