Pipelining — The Shortest Distance Between Two Ends of a Pipeline — Dead Straight & Damn the Consequences, Eh?⚠️⛔️⚠️ Globe & Mail - Brent Jang: B.C. pipeline project co-owned by Nisga’a Nation seeks to shorten route, A controversial pipeline project is seeking regulatory approval to shorten its proposed route across northern British Columbia, hoping to overcome opposition to plans for transporting natural gas. 
The Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) project, backed by the Nisga’a Nation in northwest B.C., expects the changes would reduce the route’s length by nearly 60 kilometres in Treaty 8 territory in northeast B.C. 
Eva Clayton, elected president of the Nisga’a Lisims government, said the rerouting is designed to address environmental concerns raised by other Indigenous groups and avoid sensitive caribou habitat.

“PRGT heard from Treaty 8 leaders, respected their deep and historic knowledge of the land, and made this proposed route adjustment,” Ms. Clayton said this week during a webcast organized by the BC Environmental Assessment Office. 
PRGT, co-owned by the Nisga’a and Houston-based Western LNG, is currently seeking approval from the provincial regulator to shorten the northeast portion of the route. The public comment period for the proposed amendment began on Oct. 15 and ends on Nov. 14. 
In another amendment application, the pipeline project is requesting permission to shorten the West Coast section of the route by about 100 kilometres. 
PRGT has until Nov. 25 to “substantially start” construction on Nisga’a territory to prevent its environmental assessment certificate from expiring. 
The pipeline is designed to feed the $10-billion Ksi Lisims LNG project, which is undergoing an environmental review for exporting liquefied natural gas. Floating production facilities are scheduled to be opened by Ksi Lisims on Pearse Island in 2029, with other vessels exporting LNG to Asia. 
The facilities would be located on Nisga’a-owned property on the West Coast. The Nisga’a, Western LNG and a group of natural gas producers called Rockies LNG are partners in the Ksi Lisims project near Gitlaxt’aamiks, which is home to the Nisga’a Lisims government. https://lnkd.in/gvMR4f2P

Scoping begins with the issuance of a Notice of Scoping. In that notice, FERC staff will open a “scoping” comment period. During this period, the public is asked to submit written comments on the project. Comments can be submitted electronically via FERC Online (eComment and eFiling). With the changing tides in the global energy arena, more pressure is placed on oil and gas players to decarbonize and pursue energy transition opportunities with more vigor. The same pressure is felt by many countries and governments around the globe as environmental and climate activists resort to legal action to stop further drilling activities and new oil and gas projects while doing their best to push governments into setting out plans for the phase-out of fossil fuels. This by no means signifies a definitive end for the oil and gas industry as these energy sources are still running the show all over the globe and control the lion’s share of the energy mix. However, the energy transformation to low-carbon and green sources is also gaining ground day in, day out. Canada’s announcement about the completion of the voluntary relinquishment process for the last remaining oil and gas permits off its Pacific Coast does not come as a surprise since this is the expected result after Chevron Canada decided to voluntarily give up its 23 offshore oil and gas permits on the country’s west coast. Commenting on the relinquishment of the final permits, Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister, said in a social media post: “Canada’s Pacific Offshore is now completely free from oil and gas permits – all 227 of them. Today, we have secured a better future for our Pacific Ocean, including for the Great Bear Sea and its marine life.” The reactions to the relinquishment of these permits show that the public is divided on the issue. Occam's razor dictates that the simplest answer is usually the preferred one.
