Proud to Share a Milestone Achievement! This year, the CERCUTS research team at ARIS has had the privilege of supporting two groundbreaking research projects, Golden Bubble and NovaGen, as part of the esteemed Avatar Innovations Program. Avatar Innovations Innovations is a dynamic industry-led collaboration that drives actionable business solutions for the energy transition. After four successful cycles of the program, Avatar 2024 Demo Day on November 21 marked the strongest year yet! Despite tight timelines and resource constraints, the CERCUTS team, under the expert leadership of Dr. Ehsan Aminfar, leveraged our cutting-edge research facilities to deliver exceptional support for these projects. The Golden Bubble project targets the removal of ammonia, sulfur, and nitrogen compounds from agricultural and municipal biomass, aiming to enhance the methanogenic process and optimize methane gas production. We are pleased to have helped them achieve an impressive 90% ammonia removal efficiency, demonstrating the power of combining advanced methods to find the "Goldilocks zone" for efficiently stripping ammonia and sulfur. Through intensive collaboration, brainstorming sessions, and teamwork, the CERCUTS team designed and built a bench-scale pilot plant, performing all experiments with precision and adhering to the projects’ DOEs. Special thanks to Molood Barmala, Dawson Bachand, Rogelio Lozano, Lucila Molinos, Leo Chau, and especially Pirouz Kiani, whose dedication drove the project’s success. A huge shoutout to Lifeng Zhao, our Laboratory Coordinator, as well as Paige Humphrey and Rouba Kwaider for their relentless efforts in conducting detailed laboratory analyses despite biohazard restrictions. 🔬🌎 Ever wondered about the origins of lithium, the powerhouse of our electric future? 4000m above sea level, nestled amidst towering mountains and vast deserts in the Andes, lies the ‘Lithium Triangle”. This is the extraordinary location where jacqueline edge and Evangelos Kallitsis, two leading experts from the ReLiB project specialising in the sustainability and life-cycle assessment of recycling EV batteries, embarked on a unique tour.   Last week, Jacqueline and Evangelos had the privilege of attending the groundbreaking RELiTE conference (Responsible Lithium Production for Energy Transition and Electric Mobility) in Jujuy, Argentina. This event brought together some of the brightest minds in the field of lithium extraction. The focus? Expanding lithium extraction in a sustainable way. 🌱 The conference kicked off with a formal event, featuring speeches from ministers across all lithium-producing Argentinian provinces. Their commitment to sustainable lithium extraction set the tone for the days to follow. Over the course of 3.5 days, the international delegation was immersed in a plethora of highly technical talks. These ranged from Direct Lithium Extraction technologies to modelling Li-ion batteries. 🖥️🔋 But it wasn’t just about the tech. The conference also made room for biologists and social scientists. They discussed the impacts of lithium extraction on biodiversity 🌳and local communities, ensuring a holistic approach to the issue. One of the highlights was a trip to a lithium mine. The delegates had the opportunity to ask questions and tour the facilities, including the massive evaporation ponds. 🏜️It was an eye-opening experience! The conference was successfully coordinated by Professors Alexandre Chagnes, Victoria Flexer, and Kerstin Forsberg. Their unwavering commitment and expertise contributed to an event that was both comprehensive and enlightening.👏 We’re grateful for the funding provided by France, Sweden, and Argentina, which made this insightful experience possible. It was a very full programme, but every moment was worth it. How to make our lignin depolymerisation experts happy? Give them (even more) lignin to depolymerise! 🌳🧪 🚀Milestone🚀 reached: All required lignin stock available and delivered for demonstration activities at VITO VITO received 100 kg of lignin from the project partner Bloom Biorenewables last week. This shipment of material from Switzerland to Belgium, together with the earlier shipment of lignin from Fibenol, Estonia, means that there is sufficient material for our scientists 👨🔬👩🔬 at VITO to carry out the planned demonstration activities.
