Night vision, new helicopters are pushing the frontiers of fighting wildfires in California https://lnkd.in/g2i78fBP previously I posted: Updated 7/23/24 Code Red 128 - For additional fire fighting equipment for California wildfires including modified planes for fire retardant drops only for large fires away from residential property or fire fighters Previously US DOD funds were used to modify planes to do large fire retardant drops. The code red is for that as well as other US military equipment (helicopters) that can do fire retardant drops. Once again, since some fire fighters had complained fire retardant had caused health issues for them, fire retardant drops can only be done away from fire fighters and not on residential areas. However water drops are okay. I also previously, posted due to high heat (above 100 in parts of California) the rotation for each fire fighter is 2 hours now meaning the fire fighter may only work for 2 hours & then must take a break & rotated with other fire fighter. Acceptable rotation may be from same crew that has not worked for 2 hours, fire fighter from other areas, US vet or active duty may only assist if they had been trained & have all the fire equipment needed for fighting. Nobody is allowed to touch down power lines. Only workers from the power company can touch down power lines. And I also previously posted: those who have been evacuated may be transported by US military or themselves to a safe place like a convention center where US military have set up cots, provide toiletry items, & MRE's if Catholic Charities, Red Cross, or volunteers have not made plans for food. for rest, open your facebook & click on link below... https://lnkd.in/gXH5qKrD

Watching the wildfires spread in Los Angeles is both heartbreaking and sobering. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this unspeakable tragedy. We’re also reminded of the bravery and dedication of first responders—firefighters on the ground and pilots flying “super scoopers” to drop water where it’s needed most. Currently, around 160 of these planes (Canadair CL-415, Bombardier 415, De Havilland Canada DHC-515) exist worldwide. This plane can scoop up approximately 6,000 liters (1,585 gallons) of water to drop on wildfires. De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited is the current manufacturer of these super scoopers (Now named the De Havilland Canadair 515). The Super Scooper is just one of the many manufactured ‘tools’ used by emergency responders worldwide to combat wildfires. This is why the #metalworkingnation is needed. This is why we need to inspire the next generation to get into #manufacturing. Because 160 is not enough. Emergency responders rely on manufacturers to save lives. If you’re working in a shop supporting these industries, know that your craftsmanship truly saves lives. For that, we want to #ThankAMachinist.

https://lnkd.in/eZKHy2Ef If every Chinook or other military water bucket helicopter can carry enough water for 30-70 acres; how many are needed for the fire? Probably more than 10. (Prior California fires required 36-65 gallons to be put out. Using that historical data, and not the advised formula of 100-200 gallons per acre, that yields a coverage of 70 acres per 3000 - 3,150 gallons of water / bucket.) My company has worked with Nevada and US Military on innovation public safety and innovation missions, including drone and ai disaster response. This is just tragic...#California #redcross #usnavy #USAirForce #USarmy #CoastGuard

How will advanced aerial resources improve safety and effectiveness in challenging wildfire conditions? Firehawk helicopters, designed for rapid wildfire suppression and the transport of firefighters, played a crucial role in combating the Franklin Fire in Malibu. Operated by the Ventura County Fire Department’s Aviation Unit, crews have been working around the clock since the fire ignited on Monday, quickly responding to the more than 4,000-acre blaze despite the challenges of night operations. Jeff Seabrook, a pilot with the County of Ventura Fire Aviation Unit, described the complexities of nighttime firefighting efforts: “We were working on structure protection around Pepperdine. To get there coming from the north, we are cresting over two ridges, not only at night, but now you can’t see the aircraft that are leaving Pepperdine as we're coming inbound to that area.” These two Sikorsky Firehawk helicopters, formerly Blackhawk helicopters used by the Army National Guard, joined the Ventura County Aviation Unit at the start of the 2021 fire season. Their agility, enhanced firefighting capabilities, and ability to operate in low-visibility conditions make them instrumental in reducing response times, protecting structures, and supporting ground crews as they battle intense and fast-moving fires. How do you think adding advanced firefighting aircraft like the Firehawks will influence future wildfire response strategies in difficult conditions? Over 50 helicopters have at times been at the forefront of large-scale firefighting operations to combat the devastating wildfires sweeping through California. The aerial firefighting fleet includes a diverse range of rotorcraft sourced from different nearby counties to bolster the effort, such as Chinooks, Blackhawks, Firehawks, AW139s among others. LCI Analytics have previously highlighted the growing demand and reliance on aerial firefighting resources as the fire season continues to lengthen, driven by changing climate conditions (https://lnkd.in/dUqpmkEe). Lead times for new mission-specific aircraft are now extending over several years, making multi-role, repurposed and adapted aircraft increasingly vital in addressing short-term demand. Very informative video on the Southern California fires and the Canadair C-415 "Super Scooper" 🛩️ . This tanker plane literally can collect water from an ocean or lake and carry it towards a fire. The pilots who handle such emergencies are as impressive as they are urgently needed. We also need to respect the critical roles in emergency planning and prioritize the need for sufficient funding in emergency preparedness. Let's not forget about our rotary pilot friends as well (helicopters). Over the last few days a drone got in the way of one of these Super Scooper tankers and interfered with the whole response team. Another reason drone operation technology must be closely monitored, regulated, and strictly enforced. Stay safe and stay prepared. #immigration #globalmobility #pilots #aviation #eb2niw #emergency
