Involve, an Italian firm that develops #stratosphericballoon technologies for real-time Earth monitoring, communications, and infrastructure, has raised €2.5 million in seed funding. The round was led by Earlybird Venture Capital, with support from Takeoff, the CDP Venture Capital National Network's aerospace and advanced accelerator, and co-invested by Unicredit, Fondazione CRT, and Plug and Play, which also manages operations. TLI Space, a structure engaged in #venturecapital investments in the space and technology sectors, is also a participant in the round, as promoted by Cenciarini & Co, an early-stage venture holding firm. The round is reinforced with €500,000 in convertible loans. With this #financing, Involve becomes the first Italian #business selected by Earlybird-X.  Involve intends to use the cash to speed the development of its stratospheric balloon #technology, allowing it to meet certain technical milestones. These include extending flight duration, improving control systems with #artificialintelligence, and increasing payload capacity. The company also wants to extend its staff with additional #hiring in crucial areas such as aeronautical engineering, #softwaredevelopment, and data management teams. It will also grow its global presence by expanding existing collaborations and forming new ones, particularly in the surveillance, environmental monitoring, and #telecommunications industries. Dr. Philipp Semmer, an Earlybird-X partner, stated, "We are excited to collaborate with Jonathan, Claudio, and the entire Involve Team in developing the #nextgeneration of high-altitude balloon platforms." The team convinced us of their ability to generate significant initial traction with little #funding. In addition, they were able to attract some of the industry's best figures, including Alastair Westgarth. Involve will create a new type of earth observation technology, and we are delighted to be a part of it, alongside CDP and TLI Space." In addition to the funding, Involve added Alastair Westgarth, the former CEO of Google's Project Loon, to its executive board of directors and famed astronaut Paolo Nespoli to its advisory board. The corporation also announced the appointment of a new board of directors. Founder Jonathan Polotto will continue to serve as CEO and Chairman. He will be joined by Alastair Westgarth, the former CEO of Google's pioneering Loon ballooning project who is well-known for his revolutionary contributions to #globalcommunication and aerospace. Daniel Pelaez, the CEO and co-founder of Cyvl.ai, was looking for work during the summer after his first year of #engineering school at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts. After returning home, he worked for his local public works agency, where he discovered that the software used to track road maintenance was quite limited. They urged him to get out and drive around, identify problems, and remedy them. In addition to repairing signs and felling trees, I was patching potholes. And I soon saw #Personally that they lacked any data throughout my stay there," Pelaez told. The Boston-based firm said today that it has raised $6 million. "Building and maintaining better transportation infrastructure for the entire world is our core vision and the #reason we founded the company," he stated. With sensors that can produce a virtual representation of an infrastructure #components, like a road, they are able to identify weak points and forecast when a maintenance event is likely to occur. "We're giving our end users governments and civil engineering firms, for example, better information about their transportation systems which they could have obtained in the past, enabling them to be truly data-driven in the #design and upkeep of these incredibly expansive transportation networks,” Pelaez stated. They discovered that outside civil engineering companies are frequently in charge of doing road surveys for the municipality or city, and they have started #working in a channel partnership with them. Almost two million cities and towns have used the software so far in just 2.5 years of operation, indicating that the method is effective. These cities and towns have generated approximately $2 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). Hence, it seems that the alliances with these companies are yielding benefits. He argues that resistance to #switching from manual to digital procedures has been the main rivalry thus far, rather than other businesses doing comparable things. Because he was able to earn his way through college and his father was an immigrant who arrived in the United States from Colombia with nothing, he claims to be especially aware of the importance of hard effort and the necessity to have a diverse #workforce. Companyon Ventures led the $6 million investment, and Argon Ventures, AeroX Ventures, and Alumni Ventures also contributed. The financing included #participation from current investors MassVentures, Launch Capital, and RiverPark Ventures. Exclusive: Struggling to meet their promise, battery startups that went public in the 2020-21 mania have sometimes stretched the truth of their progress. This week, we look at two of them: FREYR Battery and QuantumScape. Last week, Freyr announced a critical breakthrough in automating production of its semisolid battery. My sources say there is progress, but workers continue to intervene to make the line work. Whether it can reach high speed remains a question mark. Two years ago, QuantumScape said its lithium metal battery worked with no external pressure—thought to be impossible—and charged in 15 minutes. Last month, the company came clean: It's now trying to get somewhere close with 0.7 atmospheres of pressure and 15 min charging. It's in a six-layer cell, and aiming for 24 layers.
