Every day, there are dozens of headlines suggesting artificial intelligence is taking over the business world. But reality looks different, according to new research from the National Bureau of Economic Research. The study finds that—not surprisingly—AI use is highest at large companies, those with 5,000 to 10,000 employees. From there, use varies among sectors, with 12% of firms in manufacturing, information services, and health care using AI, compared with 4% in construction and retail. Just saw a fascinating study on AI adoption in the US. The study defined AI adoption as using AI for production. According to MIT, big companies and industries like manufacturing and healthcare are all over AI, but smaller businesses and other sectors seem to be lagging behind. This got me thinking. AI has the potential to be a game-changer across the board, but if only a few folks are using it, could it actually widen the gap instead of closing it? What do you all think? Is there a way to level the playing field and make sure everyone gets a shot at this amazing tech?

Insightful piece by MIT showing the primary barriers to AI adoption are overcoming Inertia and the cost associated with adjustment. The authors found that larger companies and start-ups with young leaders are the fastest movers in embracing these new technologies. Specific sectors, including healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing, are the most advanced when it comes to the integration of artificial intelligence. Governments' reputation as being slow to adopt technology is a thing of the past, with generative AI fueling what could be a collective leapfrog for the public sector: e.Republic research indicates a 10x or more increase in investment in only 3 years! Transparency is still lacking around how foundation models are trained, and this gap can lead to increasing tension with users as more organizations look to adopt artificial intelligence (AI). In Asia-Pacific, excluding China, IDC projects that spending on AI will grow 28.9% from $25.5 billion in 2022 to $90.7 billion by 2027. The research firm estimates that 81% of this spending will be directed toward predictive and interpretative AI applications.
