Today at Patient Safety Learning we have published a new report, ‘Electronic patient record systems: Putting patient safety at the heart of implementation’. EPR systems have significant potential to improve patient care and treatment. However, we are increasingly seeing cases where poor implementation of these new systems results in direct and indirect harm to patients. If we are to fully realise their benefits, patient safety must be at the heart of their design, development and rollout. Clinicians & patients need the right information, at the right time, that’s accurate and complete. This new report highlights why and how #patientsafety should be at the heart of EPR implementation & the risk if it’s not. In our report we identify ten principles for safe EPR system implementation to supplement the standards already in existence. We hope that this report can kick off an informed and transparent debate about these issues, leading to action that supports the safer implementation of EPR systems and reduces avoidable harm. The Oxford University Press Handbook of Patient Safety has received a great review in BMJ Quality and Safety: Honkoop PJ. BMJ Qual Saf Epub ahead of print: 21st June 2024. https://lnkd.in/e4QaugXe A few excerpts: "Most readers of BMJ Quality & Safety will agree that patients should not be harmed while receiving care and patient safety practices should be implemented more broadly. However, clinical practice is busier than ever and many healthcare staff struggle to get their job done, let alone also implement a relatively new discipline such as patient safety. Implementation is further complicated by the fact that patient safety practices are often perceived as complex." "Therefore, Peter Lachman and colleagues (John Fitzsimons Jane Runnacles Anita Jayadev and John Brennan) have written a book on patient safety for busy practising clinicians, within the Oxford University Press Professional Practice series " "To use the authors’ words, they ‘aim to provide frontline clinicians with an easy-to-read reference work, and offer simple interventions’. " "Throughout the book, there is repeated emphasis that patient safety should be used to inspire clinicians for improvement, not to bring about punishment to clinical staff." "So, do the authors succeed in writing an easy-to- read reference work? Mostly yes. The clear build-up of the book helps with understanding the concepts and this approach really engages the reader. Some beautiful sentences inspire you to want to start changing things right away—my favourite was: ‘Genuine ownership of safety at the front line begins with a core belief that all patients deserve to be free of harm’. .... overall, I enjoyed reading it and would certainly recommend it to clinicians eager to learn more about patient safety." In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare technology, true innovation lies in its ability to drive tangible improvements in patient care. After a decade of experience, I've come to realize that the key differentiator lies in the last mile adoption and the real-world evidence generated by end-users. A shining example of this is the remarkable success witnessed by Dr Pavithra LS and the team at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital. Their adoption of Remote Patient Monitoring Systems (RPMS) and AI-Powered Early Warning Systems, developed by Dozee, has yielded remarkable results, as evidenced by a recent journal publication. The findings are nothing short of remarkable: - RPMS enabled a 43.11% increase in time available for patient care by reducing the time nurses spent on routine monitoring, communication, and coordination. - Over 89% of healthcare professionals noted improvements in the level of care and overall patient safety. - More than 80% of healthcare professionals observed an improvement in the patient experience. - Over 50% of healthcare professionals found RPMS easy to use and user-friendly. - More than 60% of patients noted an overall improvement in care quality. These tangible outcomes highlight the transformative power of technology when it seamlessly integrates into real-world healthcare settings, empowering healthcare professionals and enhancing patient experiences. As we continue to push the boundaries of healthcare innovation, let us remember that true success lies in the last mile adoption and the real-world evidence generated by those on the frontlines of patient care. 🆕Electronic patient record systems: Putting patient safety at the heart of implementation. Electronic patient record (EPR) systems have the potential to improve patient treatment, increase efficiency and reduce the costs of healthcare. However, it has become increasingly evident that introducing EPR systems comes with serious patient safety risks. In a new report published today, we look at how we can ensure EPR systems are rolled out safely. This draws on findings of an expert roundtable, convened by Patient Safety Learning in June 2024. The report highlights key areas where patient safety needs to be paramount in the design, development and implementation of EPR systems. It subsequently identifies the following ten principles to consider for safer EPR system implementation.
