Have you read this month’s Land & Business magazine from The CLA? 📰 Englefield House and the wider Estate is featured as a case study about diversification for rural businesses, highlighting the Heritage Live Festivals summer concerts as an example of a unique social experience and commercial opportunity for Estates. Our Estates Director, Edward Crookes and Events Manager, Peter Carson, spoke with Jasmin McDermott at The CLA about the intricacies of planning these large events, the importance of working with an organiser who is aligned with the Estate’s values, as well as the benefits these types of events have for those who live locally and work at Englefield. Edward said: “The filming and events operation forms an important part of the estate’s enterprises in diversifying our sources of income; they make a vital contribution to the costs of maintaining the historic fabric of Englefield House, the park and gardens. “They are hard work for the team, but also great fun and a busy events calendar enriches estate life for those who live and work here.” To read more about this year’s summer concerts, click here: https://lnkd.in/dcKzZYWU The full CLA article can be viewed here: https://lnkd.in/eW4rFdbP #EnglefieldEstate #EnglefieldHouse #RuralBusiness #LandedEstate #Diversification #EventsVenue

There's good news for Small Scale Local Festivals and Summer School organisers! The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports, and Media has approved a generous € 69,945 funding allocation for this sector This initiative aims to enrich our communities by supporting 16 vibrant local cultural events across Ireland. This scheme provides crucial financial support to smaller-scale events that play a vital role in our cultural landscape but may not meet the criteria for larger funding bodies like Fáilte Ireland or the Arts Council. By backing these festivals and summer schools, the scheme promotes local culture and fosters community spirit and tourism within these areas. Competitive Process: The allocation follows a competitive application process. Each event can receive up to €5,000 to enhance its offerings and accessibility. Whether you're a local event organizer or a culture lover eager to explore diverse festivals and educational opportunities, this funding boost is a game-changer for promoting rich cultural experiences in Ireland. 📅 Stay tuned for more updates on the events benefiting from this scheme throughout 2024! 👉 Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eHmGGyiU #LocalCulture #GovernmentFunding #IrishFestivals #SummerSchools #CulturalFunding #MakingItHappen #LocalEnterprise

Berlin’s Famous Club Scene Faces the End of the Party The closing of renowned clubs Watergate and Renate spells trouble for the city’s nightlife. The techno scene owes its existence to an historical anomaly. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, there were heaps of abandoned spaces for clubbing to flourish and property was astonishingly cheap. Situated in an un-renovated, labyrinthine apartment block in the east of the city, Renate blamed its decision to close next year on rising rents and its landlord’s wish to repurpose the club’s enticing garden for new construction. Watergate’s explanation for ending its 22-year run was both more nuanced and concerning. Along with rising rent, wage and energy costs at its prime waterside location, its management pointed to shifts in the relevance of Berlin club culture for international DJs and young people: “The days when Berlin was flooded with club-loving visitors are over, at least for now, and the scene is fighting for survival.” Two-thirds of clubs rated their business prospects over the next couple of years as “bad” or “very bad,” according to a recent survey, and their revenue this year has declined by around 10% on average compared with 2023. Berlin’s nightclubs are faring better than those in the UK, where about three-quarters of venues have shut since 2005.

Fiona Campbell, CEO of the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers, said: “This is a predictable mess. We consistently highlighted the dire consequences that would follow from a draconian approach to short-term let regulation and these forewarnings are becoming glaringly apparent. However, this may be the tip of the iceberg if yet more self-catering businesses close, with the difficulties faced this year being amplified in 2025. Short-term lets were scapegoated for all manner of ills and treated as a panacea for wider housing challenges despite the fact that they make up only 0.7% of Edinburgh’s total housing stock. The reduction in the availability of this type of accommodation – an essential part of the tourism sector – is driving up costs. The Council once said there were 12,000 STLs in the city but just 105 secondary lets have been granted a full licence. Edinburgh is renowned for its unique cultural offering but such bungled policymaking over short-term lets risks damaging its position as a place to visit and do business. A world-leading Festival city should be more than able to accommodate comedians yet it risks becoming a laughing stock of its own making. Even at the eleventh hour, industry stands ready to work with local and national government so we can fairly and effectively regulate the sector before irreversible damage is done.” https://lnkd.in/eT5UxeJ7
