In May two years ago, Ae_Altreconomia published "Ecologia Digitale", "Digital Ecology" in English, a collective reflection on the cultural, socio-economic and environmental impacts of digital innovation. Four months later, in November, OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT and, in a matter of a few months, turned the digital world upside down, magnifying two of the fundamental ecological issues highlighted in "Ecologia Digitale": data extractivism - Generative AI is rooted in the scraping of every content available on the internet, regardless of authorship and intellectual property -, and resource depletion - Generative AI is avid of electricity, water for cooling, precious and rare minerals for processing, land for ever larger data centres. The ecological impact is such that a company like Microsoft, at the heart of Generative AI and committed to be carbon positive by 2030, has recently reported a 30% increase in its 2023 carbon emissions due to higher computational load and related electricity consumption, building of new data centres and upgrading of processing infrastructure. The article linked discusses in more detail the extreme form of extractivism practiced by Generative AI and the additional environmental challenges it creates, calling for more responsible AI innovation.

Generative AI represents a cutting-edge technology that processes vast amounts of data, rapidly becoming a preferred tool for organizations seeking competitive advantages and improved performance. However, as users encounter increasing complexity in the information provided, concerns about the reliability of generative AI responses are emerging. To address these concerns, fostering trust through transparency is essential. In the transportation industry, generative AI is ushering in a new era, enabling fleet managers to access a wealth of information previously unimaginable. Current applications include safety analyses, predictive maintenance, route optimization, and monitoring of electric vehicles, among others. Advanced fleet management tools now offer concrete answers to complex queries by storing data threads to enhance future interactions while ensuring the protection of sensitive information. The transparency of AI systems is critical for user trust. Users should be able to understand how AI arrives at specific conclusions, which helps identify potential errors. This understanding is facilitated when AI tools provide comprehensive interpretations of user qu…

A recent global survey by McKinsey on artificial intelligence (AI) reveals that 72% of respondents report their organizations have adopted AI in at least one business function, representing a significant increase from the previous year. The adoption of generative AI (gen AI) has surged, with 65% of respondents regularly using gen AI, nearly double the figure from just ten months ago. The survey also highlights the tangible benefits seen by businesses utilizing gen AI, including cost reductions and revenue increases in various business units. However, organizations are also recognizing associated risks such as data management, model management, and security issues, which they are actively working to mitigate. The survey identifies three archetypes for gen AI implementation: "takers," "shapers," and "makers," each with distinct approaches to utilizing gen AI tools. High-performing organizations attributing a significant portion of their earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) to gen AI face challenges related to data and operational models. The survey also explores investments in generative AI and analytical AI, indicating that most organizations expe…
