Director @ MoLI - Museum of Literature Ireland | Strategic Leadership, Cultural Collaboration, Communications | Composer

Delighted with the announcement of our new CEO, David Cleary. I can't wait to see where you take the good ship MoLI—may you have fair winds at your back! ⛵ Just over seven years ago I got a call from the great Eamonn Ceannt to say I had been appointed the first Director of what would become MoLI, a new museum for Joyce and Irish literature on St Stephen’s Green, funded by the Naughton Foundation, Fáilte Ireland, and University College Dublin in collaboration with the National Library of Ireland. I cannot describe what an opportunity this was: to help build a major cultural institution from the ground up with such support. Mark O'Neill was our first hire, returning to Ireland from the Design Museum to become our Head of Operations and help us dream it all up. Jennie Ryan, Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, and Donna Marie O'Donovan quickly joined, creating our learning, exhibition, and development programs. A dream team. We worked like maniacs (sometimes by candlelight when the power went out!) as Scott Tallon Walker Architects, Purcell and Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) transformed UCD Newman House into MoLI. We opened in September 2019 with an amazing launch event, a mark of things to come. A close family of patrons/supporters gathered, joined in time by corporate partners like Clancourt Management, Maples Group, Ebow Digital, AerCap, and Goodbody. Together, we created something truly unique—a contemporary literary museum for the world’s greatest storytellers, with the world watching us. Covid closed us 6 months later but we bounced back in 2022. Just over a year after reopening, MoLI was awarded a Europa Nostra Grand Prix, the European Commission’s most important cultural heritage award—recognition of the ethos of access and inclusion we built into MoLI from the start and its importance on the global stage. It’s impossible to list all the incredible collaborators I’ve worked with through MoLI. I’ll continue to look back in disbelief at how lucky I was. Special people make special places—I’ve been so fortunate to work with Jennie, Ben, and an endless list of wonderful colleagues (a particular nod to Zoe Brady, always barely five feet away and hearer of everything!). Board members past and present were hugely supportive—special thanks to my chair Geoffrey Keating and to Margaret Kelleher, Katherine McSharry, and PJ Barron, with MoLI since it was a flicker of an idea. You are bottomless wells of wisdom. I’ll miss striving to meet the impossible every day, making work with amazing artists, noisy streams of happy kids running through the rooms, Bloomsday hip-hop parties, amazing lectures, online book clubs, late-night exhibition installs… even the endless plumbing/rota challenges 😳 But most of all, I’ll miss our staff and volunteers— passing chats in the corridors, training sessions, wild karaoke parties (keep them going!!), and their relentless openness, optimism and passion that is MoLI's beating ❤️. I am so proud of them all. Onwards!

The Board of the Museum of Literature Ireland is pleased to announce the appointment of David Cleary as the new Director/CEO of MoLI. David Cleary is currently the Director of Sales & Operations for EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, Dublin. He was previously Head of Sales for the museum and has also led the sales role for the Jeanie Johnston and The CHQ Building as an events venue. Speaking of his appointment, David Cleary commented: "I am honoured to take on the role of Director/CEO of MoLI, an institution that celebrates the transformative power of storytelling and Ireland's rich literary heritage.” “I am committed to building on the remarkable achievements of Simon O'Connor and the entire team as we look to the future to foster inclusion, creativity and a deeper understanding of the written word.” “My aim is to work closely with University College Dublin, the National Library of Ireland and the many donors, members and supporters of MoLI to bring the timeless beauty of literature to people from all walks of life."
