#supplychain #transportation Will supply chain AI eventually replace human operators? The grapevine is buzzing on the heels of a $15.6M venture round for HappyRobot led by no other than a16z. This is as good as it gets in terms of venture funding. Yet VCs have been wrong at times, especially when it comes to our industry. It is very easy to underestimate the complexity and variability of supply chains. Real people are still tipping the scale when it comes to making decisions that are often based on incomplete information, years of experience, or gut feel. HappyRobot builds agentic AI to simplify and streamline logistics operations, with a focus on the communication needs of freight brokerages. Essentially, they are creating a conversational robot that can make calls to transportation providers and negotiate deals with them among other things. There is no doubt that the technology will help operators become more efficient. A machine can make thousands of calls in parallel after all. The technology adapts quickly to new information and becomes increasingly better over time. The real question is whether this is merely "paving the cow path." We should probably first ask why there are so many calls and then discuss solutions. In terms of calling carriers, this is all good and well. However, the VCs surely did not invest in that capability alone but rather a comprehensive vision that disintermediates an entire industry (heard that before...?). Can HappyRobot eventually take on transport execution, which is a logical next step? This would be significantly more difficult and just replacing people with a machine won't do the trick. You need a much deeper process integration and a lot of additional collaborative features. #truckl #innovation
