❓ Are others facing challenges with rapid outpatient procedure triage and access? How are you approaching this problem and what new solutions are you trialing? One program we started in 2021 during COVID-19 is the GI Rapid Outpatient Access Progam. We slowed down to work together with our Emergency Department teammates to co-create the program in a way that included our ED team in the design and prioritized a co-defined group of patients we believed needed more urgent access to outpatient GI procedural care. We also worked together across Medical Group AND Affiliated GI teams to help improve collective access for the patients in the program. More Outpatient Again(?) When I started my career in healthcare about ten years ago, moving inpatient care to outpatient care was the hot topic. Every conference I attended emphasized the cost benefits of outpatient care, with knee replacements moving to Ambulatory Surgical Care being a prime example. Recently, I've noticed a resurgence in discussions about expanding ASCs. This made me wonder: is this idea making a comeback, or did it never truly go away? To investigate, I turned to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality US health system compendium - thanks for this amazing dataset, Alex Bohl (he/him), Eugene Rich, and the team at Mathematica! I took the five health systems with the most outpatient centers in 2022, creating a graph of their growth over time. The graph shows the "Total number of outpatient centers (including medical group practice sites, clinics, and other outpatient facility types)." To account for mergers, I included pre-merger companies in the chart. Interestingly, between 2016 and 2018, these large health systems significantly expanded their outpatient centers. However, the momentum seemed to slow during the pandemic, with growth flattening in 2020 and 2021. The latest data from 2022 shows early signs of revitalization. It appears the move to outpatient care never truly died – it just took a pause during the pandemic. Now, I'm curious to see how these numbers will look in 2024.
