🖤 Interested in using biochar carbon removal (#BCR) as part of your sustainability strategy? 🤓 Don’t miss out on this year’s German Biochar Forum, to be held in Berlin on November 18th-19th. You will be able to learn everything you need to know about BCR, its role in policy today, and how exactly you can leverage it within your own net-zero strategy. While I will personally sadly not be able to make it, you will be able to meet and listen to some of my favourite colleagues: 🏗️ Carbonfuture’s Anna J. LEHNER will be talking about how to implement the insetting of biochar in construction products within the framework of Environmental Product Declarations (#EPD). 🏛️ Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE)’s Managing Director Stefan Schlosser will be discussing the role of BCR in Germany’s carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) strategy. 🇩🇪 German Biochar e.V. (Fachverband Pflanzenkohle e.V.)’s Vice Chairwoman Carolin Güthenke, who also serves with me on the Board of Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE), will be hosting the event 👀 Check out the full programme and sign up today here: https://lnkd.in/dGhxJhWd 🚀 BCR is picking up pace right, left, and centre. 🌾 Circular Bioeconomy: A climate-friendly future for the EU agri-food sector? 🚜 The EU's agricultural sector faces growing challenges from the climate and biodiversity crises. In response, a well-designed circular bioeconomy could provide a sustainable solution, benefiting both the economy and the environment. ♻ In this policy brief, Sophia Hub, Arianna Lombari, Geneviève Pons-Deladrière, and Pascal Lamy explore how the circular bioeconomy can help decarbonise the agri-food sector by repurposing food loss, by-products, and production residues. However, they also caution against unsustainable biomass demand, emphasising the need for circularity and sustainable resource management. [European Sustainable Development Week 2024] #DidYouKnow? 60% of global CO2 emissions come from industry. In response to these challenges, green industry offers solutions that reduce carbon footprints and improve natural resource management. 🌱 As a green chemistry player, AFYREN is committed to reducing this impact with 100% biobased solutions, thereby reducing oil dependency and carbon emissions. Our circular model is based on a zero waste 🔄 concept, using biomass co-products without competing with human food. This production model maximizes resources and minimizes waste and thus participates in preserving biodiversity 🌿 and water resources 💧, contributing directly to Sustainable Development Goals (#SDG2, #SDG3, #SDG12, #SDG13, #SDG15). Our innovations in green chemistry (#SDG9) are not limited to ecological solutions, but also support territorial competitiveness and create sustainable jobs 💼 (#SDG8). #SustainableDevelopment #ESDW2024 #UNSDGs #SustainableSolutions #GreenChemistry #Bioeconomy

I just discovered my latest paper on a Circular and Sustainable Bioeconomy was published. Hope you enjoy the read! Happy to discuss. Sharing my thoughts in a nutshell: - In a world still obsessed with growth and consumption, let us hope that at least the consumption of non-renewable natural resources will finally come at a more tolerable cost for our planet, thanks to an enabling policy environment. But first, market instability and speculative price hikes in commodity trading must be regulated to prevent a worsening of the global food crisis. It is inconceivable that the rich are getting richer while the number of food insecure people increases every year (and will skyrocket as we increasingly experience the consequences of climate change). - No person behind a desk, in a processing plant or anywhere else is more important than every farmer or forester who breaks their back, rain or shine, even in extreme weather events, to ensure our collective food security and survival. On their work depends the survival of our species in our current hyperspecialised society. I wish our politicians in the ivory towers of the institutions (and every citizen) would remember this every time they sit down to an expensive meal and talk politics - not just when farmers are mobilising. Now, some quite long personal reflections (also on the next "Industrial Green Deal") below and in the comments: A circular and sustainable bioeconomy can indeed help address many of the ongoing problems within the EU agrifood sector, but with a few caveats: 🔺 On the upcoming EU's Industrial Policy acceleration: - We rather need a systemic reform that mainstreams the ONE health concept in all policies, and especially for agri-food, this will require safeguards against green-washing in the bioeconomy sector. - **Sustainable bioeconomy should not be a secondary market in perpetual expansion; it must replace the existing, linear, extractive, and unsustainable economy.** - Resources need to be sustainably sourced and used for multiple purposes (cascading principle) to achieve a truly sustainable and as circular as possible model. Otherwise, lets be clear: it's going to be a waste of taxpayers' money, exacerbating biodiversity and climate crises. 🚩 On farmers' protests & requests: - The EU needs to start putting farmers (the one that prioritise ONE health) at the centre first by regulating the market 1) with better and more long-term contracts, 2) by redistributing the profits more fairly across the value chain, compensating the true stewards of nature and natural resources. - Build self-sufficiency, not dependency. As if we did not learn anything from the COVID and Ukraine-war crises - and especially not dependency on extra inputs instead of working in synergy with nature, and not more liberalised markets which tend to create concentration of power in a market. (continues in the comment below, for those interested )

How can microalgae improve wastewater treatment? Microalgae have emerged as a powerful tool in revolutionizing wastewater treatment, offering a sustainable solution to a critical global challenge. By harnessing the natural capabilities of microalgae, we can significantly improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment processes. These tiny but mighty organisms not only remove harmful pollutants from wastewater but also recover valuable nutrients in the process. Through innovative bioremediation projects, microalgae play a vital role in making our water sources cleaner and safer. This eco-friendly approach doesn't just address water pollution—it also aligns with the principles of the circular economy, turning waste into resources and contributing to a more sustainable future. Proalgaetech is actively supporting these initiatives, leveraging cutting-edge microalgae technologies to enhance wastewater treatment efficiency. Our ongoing projects focus on real-world applications where microalgae not only treat wastewater but also contribute to resource recovery and environmental sustainability. As we continue to explore and expand the potential of microalgae in wastewater treatment, we're not just cleaning water—we're paving the way for a greener planet. 🌍 #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #WastewaterTreatment #Bioremediation #Microalgae #EnvironmentalInnovation #CleanWater #ProAlgaeTech #eu
