How can self-testing and self-management options transform healthcare access for traditionally marginalised groups?
Our latest ‘Future of Care’ report delves into this critical question, revealing how self-care models can empower marginalised communities by providing safer and more accessible health management options.
One of the key insights from our conversation with Dr Phillip Read explores the shift from traditional clinical care models to self-testing and self-administration, which can significantly enhance healthcare accessibility and outcomes. Drawing on successful examples like HIV self-testing, the report highlights how similar approaches can be applied to other health issues such as Hepatitis and STIs.

How can self-testing and self-management options transform healthcare access for traditionally marginalised groups?
As part of the ‘Future of Care’ podcast series, we had a conversation with Dr Phillip Read, where we spoke about how challenging the status quo can lead to better health outcomes.

What do we aspire for: The healthiest population or the best healthcare system? and, What is value in healthcare?
I feel like these two are some of the main questions we have to address nowadays, and it was great to see it developed in Bogi Eliasen's interview with Dr. Pradnya Bivalkar and Henry Alt-Haaker at the Think. Debate. Inspire. A Podcast of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, link here (https://lnkd.in/eRY2DxP5)
The podcast is great for anyone interested in getting an idea of the current challenges healthcare faces, and some of the context needed to understand these nuanced and complex problems.
The interview discusses much more, but some of the topics that I found interesting during the conversation:
Given the widespread dissatisfaction despite increased financial and professional resources in healthcare, what fundamental shifts are necessary to align with patient expectations and needs?
How can healthcare systems shift their focus from costly diagnostics and technology to a more effective understanding and management of health care?
What are the fundamental differences in healthcare approaches between Eastern (Asia) and Western(other regions) traditions, and the role of culture in their approach to healthcare?
What are the key factors driving the high costs within healthcare systems, and how can these be mitigated by addressing root causes rather than symptoms?
What role does healthcare play in promoting equity and security in society, and how can inclusivity be improved in health discussions and decisions?
How does the hype around AI in healthcare compare with its actual utility, particularly considering issues of transparency and data quality?
Given the constraints and privacy concerns, how should the healthcare sector approach the use of data and digitalization to improve patient outcomes?
Thank you for sharing it Michael Rebhan it was a great primer to how these problems are being approached in the Nordics.
Healthcare feels broken, doesn’t it?
I’ve worked in industries that thrive on solving problems, yet the healthcare system seems designed to keep them going indefinitely.
Here’s the deal: Most people hate going to the doctor. Why? Because it feels impersonal, transactional, and, at times, like you’re just part of a money-making machine.
Imagine a system where doctors didn’t profit from prescriptions. Where care was personalized, driven by your specific bloodwork and needs—not generic solutions meant for "everyone."
That’s the future I hope to see. A system where we solve problems at the root, not just patch them up with another pill or another appointment.
The irony? We’re surrounded by tools and technology that could make this happen. But the question remains: Who’s brave enough to actually build it?
I’d love to hear your thoughts—what do you think needs to change in healthcare?
Antonio Panella & Mohammed Abubakr dive into the current healthcare challenges and explore bold ideas for a personalized, solution-driven approach in this week’s podcast episode.
