Sacks from the National Institutes of Health, researchers from the #GloW team, Dr. Claire Guivarch, Dr. Wei Wei Pang, and Prof. Cuilin Zhang MD, MPH, PhD., have just published a paper exploring the longitudinal associations between glycated albumin — a marker of glycemia, and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Unexpectedly, women who were diagnosed with GDM in later pregnancy had significantly lower mean glycated albumin concentrations in mid-pregnancy than those who did not develop GDM. These surprising findings merit further confirmation in other populations. “Our findings highlight the necessity for further research in order to understand the role of glycated albumin in the development of GDM in different populations” commented Prof. Zhang. It is the most common metabolic disorder in pregnant women and is associated with adverse outcomes for both mothers and their babies. This study estimates the prevalence of gestational #diabetes mellitus in Puerto Rico from 2016 to 2021 by analyzing data collected by Puerto Rico's Department of Health, providing evidence of a steady increase in the prevalence of GDM in Puerto Rico from 2016 to 2021 and highlighting the importance of ongoing surveillance and specific interventions to mitigate risk factors. #Glucose_Intolerance 

New in maternal health research: Recent study links pre-pregnancy obesity to increased inflammation and depression risk Recent research from the pre-birth cohort Barwon Infant Study reveals that pre-pregnancy obesity is not only a risk factor for depression during pregnancy but also correlates with heightened inflammation. The study included 883 women and analyzed their depressive symptoms and stress levels during and after pregnancy.  💡 Key findings:     - For each kg/m2 increase in pre-pregnancy BMI, the risk of depression during pregnancy rises.    - Elevated levels of several inflammatory biomarkers, like GlycA and IL-6, were noted in women with obesity. In her paper published this week, Sarah Price of The Royal Women's Hospital and The Royal Melbourne Hospital shows the value of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in obesity during pregnancy.🤰🏾 Pregnant women without gestational diabetes (GDM) but with obesity had significantly higher plasma glucose than pregnant women without GDM or obesity during early and mid-pregnancy.📈 This suggests that glucose mediates adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with obesity, even in the absence of GDM.➡️ In addition to efforts to improve pre-pregnancy weight status, these results suggest there is potential benefit to improving glucose during pregnancy with obesity.📉 #obesity #pregnancy #glucose #CGM https://lnkd.in/gecnStmd

Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or their oxygen carrying capacity is insufficient to meet the physiological needs of the individual, which consequently will vary by age, sex, attitude, smoking and pregnancy status. Anaemia is the commonest medical disorder in pregnancy. It is responsible for significant high maternal and fetal mortality rate worldwide. Addressing anaemia during pregnancy through proper screening, supplementation, and medical care is essential to minimize these risks and ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and the baby. Anaemia during pregnancy can lead to various complications such as: ⭕ Low birth weight: Anaemia reduces the amount of oxygen that reaches the fetus, potentially impairing its growth and development. ⭕ Preterm birth: Anaemia increases the risk of delivering prematurely, which can lead to a host of health issues for the baby. ⭕ Impaired fetal development and growth: Due to insufficient oxygen supply to the fetus, potentially leading to developmental delays or birth defects. ⭕ Infections: Increased susceptibility to infections and other illnesses due to weakened immune function. ⭕ Preeclampsia: Anaemia has been linked to an increased risk of developing preeclampsia, a serious condition characterized by high blood pressure and organ damage. It's crucial for pregnant women to undergo regular prenatal care and screenings to detect and manage anaemia early to mitigate these risks. The researchers in this study investigated whether patterns of antihypertensive medication use in the first two years after delivery differed from women with or without a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (HDP). The study used data from a Danish register which included 784,782 women with at least 1 pregnancy lasting 20 or more weeks. Only the first pregnancy for these women who delivered between January 1995 to December 2018 was considered in the study. The study found that blood pressure medication use varied by HDP status, severity, and specific condition. Approximately a quarter of study participants began medication more than 3 months postpartum. Researchers suggest routine postpartum blood pressure monitoring to prevent diagnostic delays in the initiation of antihypertensive medication use to improve cardiovascular disease prevention among women. TAKE HOME MESSAGE: Early diagnosis and effective management of persistent postpartum hypertension is an effective strategy to reduce long-term cardiovascular disease among women with pregnancies complicated by HDPs.
