Last week, we hosted the latest instalment of our Investor-Founder Mixer Series with a dinner centred around biomaterials. Around the table we had six entrepreneurs from our BioFounder Club and six investors from our BioCapital Network - all either building or investing in biomaterial companies. Attending BioFounder Club companies: 🍺 Arda Biomaterials - transforming spent beer grains into a 100% animal and plastic-free leather-like biomaterial. 🏗️ Biozeroc - converting waste to carbon neutral construction biomaterials including cement-free bio-concrete. 👜 Modern Synthesis - utilising nanocellulose-producing bacteria to create a novel class of nonwoven biomaterials to displace plastic films and leathers. 🍄 Really Clever - discovery platform developing fungi-derived biomaterials that are clean, sustainable, and naturally cruelty-free including an alternative to leather. 🪵 Sonichem - biorefinery technology converting low-value woody biomass into high-value green chemicals such as lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. 🩹 Zentraxa - design and synthesis of novel synthetic peptide biomaterials for personal care, medical adhesive and industrial adhesive applications. 💸 Attending BioCapital Network investors from Amino Collective, CPI Enterprises Limited, Discovery Park Ventures, Future Planet Capital/UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund, Parkwalk Advisors, Rockstart and Zero Carbon Capital. A huge thank you to CPI Enterprises Limited for sponsoring the dinner. If you want to find out more about CPI’s investment activity or our sustainable material capabilities including formulation, functionalisation, analytics for manufacturing, fermentation and cell culture process engineering, process optimisation, scale-up and more - drop Matthew McCann a line! Our Investor-Founder Dinner Series is centred around facilitating meaningful connections between investors and entrepreneurs, enabling them to discuss thoughts on the industry, share investment opportunities and get to know each other in a more relaxed and personal manner. We theme each dinner around a specific area within life sciences. Everyone around the table is either building or actively investing in that space and we aim for a 1:1 investor:entrepreneur ratio. If you’re a life science entrepreneur and want to get involved in a future mixer, sign-up to the BioFounder Club here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eGPu-wqM If you’re a life science investor and want to get involved in a future mixer, sign-up to the BioCapital Network here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ezpNRsCM If you’re interested in getting unique and intimate access to a group of both investors and entrepreneurs, drop us a line about our sponsorship options for these dinners and more! #innovation #venturecapital #founder #entrepreneur #biomaterials #lifesciences #sustainablematerials #BioFounderClub #BioCapitalNetwork

Biotech startup AmphiStar, a leader in sustainable surfactant products, has recently been awarded a €2 million non-dilutive grant from SPRIN-D (Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation). This brings the total funding secured by the Belgian innovator to €10 million this year. AmphiStar’s biotechnology platform utilizes synthetic biology to develop custom molecules that meet specific performance requirements. These tailor-made biosurfactants, derived from organic waste and side streams, not only provide an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional chemically produced surfactants (fossil- and biobased) and other commercial microbial biosurfactants, but also open up new opportunities for innovation in the cleaning, cosmetics, and personal care industries. 🍫 The current global shortage of cocoa highlights just how fragile the food industry is in the face of climate change. A new startup from the Wyss found a solution in an unusual place: bacteria. 🦠 Circe Bioscience has used genetically engineered microbes to produce cocoa butter in the lab that’s identical to the real stuff. 🌎 But they’re not stopping at chocolate. Circe’s technology has the potential to produce sugars, fats, biodegradable plastics, and biofuels - all using only CO2, water, and electricity as inputs. It offers a way to dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of a wide variety of industries by using life itself to manufacture the materials we need to support both human development and our planet’s health. #Sustainability #Manufacturing #CocoaShortage #Startup #Entrepreneurship #GreenTech https://lnkd.in/e8iuqNGH

🌱 Another path toward composites sustainability, really? 🌱 As I continue my deep dive into the world of composite material recycling, I’m equally fascinated by alternative approaches to achieving sustainability in this space. One such path is BIO COMPOSITES—materials that could redefine our relationship with natural resources. Today, I came across an intriguing list by Tracxn featuring the Top 10 Bio Composites Startups: 1️⃣ Ecovative - the mycelium technology company 2️⃣ RENEWCELL (M) SDN BHD 3️⃣ SPINNOVA® 4️⃣ Woodoo 5️⃣ Kineco Exel Composites India 6️⃣ ECOR Global 7️⃣ 3DBioFibR Inc. 8️⃣ Spiderwort Biotechnologies Inc. 9️⃣ LEKO Labs 🔟 INCA Renewtech It’s inspiring to see innovation blossoming in this field, yet I’m left wondering: 🔍 What’s your take on bio composites? 💡 Which companies or technologies are missing from this list? Let’s ignite a conversation about new possibilities for composites sustainability. 🚀 #Sustainability #Composites #Innovation #BioComposites #Recycling
