"Wait, then why are you here?" 😅 A common question that was asked not unkindly last week in Perugia at #ijf24 when I told some of the journalists I had the joy of meeting that I was not "one of them." 😉 The answer: My employer's main goal is to help journalists and newsrooms address their biggest challenges with our technology. The only way Tickaroo can ensure that our software helps newsrooms is by speaking directly with journalists, editors, and product managers about all the issues that impact them daily. While we work closely with our clients to stay up to date with their challenges, larger journalism conferences provide us with even more insights, especially about newsrooms in other countries. We know our software can't fix everything, but by having a holistic approach to learning about overarching challenges, we gain new perspectives on how our software can work within this dynamic ecosystem. The Directory of European Journalism Networks is a live, searchable database of journalism networks, collectives, hubs, unions and groups from Europe, focusing on collaborative and cross-border journalism. Evolving from a pan-European magazine into a collaborative media platform that spans European borders and societies, our mission at Are We Europe is to build a European media landscape that reflects the diversity of voices across all European countries and regions. How can we apply constructive journalism to trade union reporting? This is the question at the heart of a new project by our Journalist Fellow Ingeborg Vigerust Rangul Here's a bit of context. Fagbladet is a magazine serving members of the largest trade union in Norway, which represents a wide range of public sector professions. The magazine's mission is to provide credible journalism that increases members’ knowledge of their profession, showcases the importance of their work, and offers a platform for addressing injustice and bias. Our Journalist Fellow Ingeborg Vigerust Rangul, who works at Fagbladet, wanted to explore the potential of constructive journalism to enhance her own reporting on these issues and better serve her audience in Norway. In a new project she looks at different ways journalists have applied this discipline in countries such as Finland and Sweden, and reflects on how newsrooms can successfully foster it. Key quote from the project: "Constructive journalism thrives when a few members of the editorial team are tasked with the responsibility of looking for these stories. They take responsibility for looking for constructive angles by asking: What happens now? What do we do from here? How has this problem developed? Has anyone had this problem before and solved it?" Some thoughts from my first visit to the International Journalism Festival in Perugia last week #IJF2024: ·      As an independent publisher and a solopreneur, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a community. Journalism conferences are an opportunity to meet other founders, reporters who have undertaken similar journeys. There is no parallel to peer-to-peer learning. Perugia was fascinating both in scope & scale. My experience over the years at journalism conferences in Europe has also shown me, how much the conversation on media sustainability has evolved. It has been interesting to witness the sheer diversity and the mushrooming of small newsrooms. This has been very inspiring. ·      Also eye-opening was to meet other kinds of actors in the entrepreneurial media space who link innovators to funders/investors. The specificity of the journalism business demands rare expertise. Grateful to have had a glimpse of this at Perugia. ·      On funds/resources, well, yes there is limited money overall. I am convinced though for media to remain independent, we need more “journalism funders”. It does not make ethical sense to be funded by big actors who are stakeholders on beats one reports on. This is certainly true in our case - global health journalism. I hope and believe that there are / will be enough journalism funders who recognize the political nature of this space. The challenges to insulate independent media operations from the very real pressures of financial viability is what all entrepreneurs face. I hope we will always have the latitude to make wise choices to definitively avoid conflicts of interest. This is a cautious balancing act we have had to perform. Readers of the community we service are consumers of the information we provide – it is crucial for readers to become paying subscribers. But we cannot depend on actors with big pockets who have commercial interest in the field we are reporting on. Geneva Health Files has a winning business model where readers pay for analysis as much as for our editorial independence and critical journalism. ·      What also became obvious to me is that journalism founders / media entrepreneurs do not have a lot of options but to literally look within their own initiatives to come up with marketing, communications and revenue generating opportunities specific to our audiences and communities. Given our niche, the strategies of monetization for our ecosystem have to be crafted by us. Sure, there are universal lessons from other success stories that can be distilled to be transposed elsewhere, but the germ of the sustainability solutions lies within us. And finally, it was fabulous to meet other Indian journalists, among others, working against all odds, dealing with commercial viability while providing robust journalism. Their work inspires me every day. Great event! Towards the end I could pitch GHF in 20 seconds flat: subscriber nos., grants received, niche topic, impact!

Shout-out to Local Media for Democracy and Journalismfund Europe! 📣 The Czech Republic is facing a long-term crisis in local journalism. Quality media in the regions is lacking, with minimal investigative and analytical work being done. Salaries are low, and the workload is immense, leading to media centralization in Prague. Our dire situation has now been confirmed by European-level research. (https://lnkd.in/d8Wn4yjf) 😥 When Klára Filipová, Simona Janíková, and I decided to set up a newsroom in Ostrava, returning from stable positions to our hometown, everyone told us we were crazy. It is a very risky business with an uncertain future. Yes, we are a bit crazy—most journalists are—but it makes sense to us. Without quality local journalism, the role of journalists as watchdogs of democracy fails. This failure harms not only the citizens of the affected regions but everyone. That is why we are grateful to Journalismfund Europe for supporting our efforts. Without the Local Media for Democracy grant, we could not have started, and the creation of Okraje would have been much more challenging. It is uncommon for funding organizations to support start-up projects like ours. Usually, a grant application requires several years of existence. However, the LM4D grant committee trusted us, and I am sure we fulfilled the expectations. The investigative and analytical website Okraj.cz was launched in Ostrava a few months ago. We are a team of three people dedicated to in-depth journalistic work. We want to give a voice to unheard people and uncovered places. We are glad that there are organizations that see this as important. Thank you, we will continue to do so! And you, please, keep supporting local journalists and media. We all need it. 🙏
