Meet Henning Spjelkavik, a Principal Engineer at Schibsted Marketplaces who drives collaboration and innovation across teams and projects! 👋 💬 Hey Henning, what's a typical day like for a Principal Engineer? As a Principal Engineer, my typical day consists of collaborating with people and teams, but who I work with depends on the most important initiative or challenge at the moment. In that sense, no day is typical. Over a week, I might work on a business strategy, have a whiteboard session with two teams on collaborating and exchanging data for a project, or help dig into network traffic to understand a performance challenge. 💬 What's a recent project you've worked on? We were migrating from a codebase that had served us well but lacked maintenance to a shared codebase. This happened alongside a reorganisation, so there were many new people to work with, details to understand and discussions about scope. In the end, we launched an internationalised and localised recommerce experience with the same codebase in Norway and Finland. 💬 What opportunities for professional growth and innovation does Schibsted Marketplaces offer to tech professionals like yourself? This approach helped her team navigate user feedback constructively, ensuring the platform met its strategic goals. I just rewatched Lenny’s interview with Brian Chesky , from last Nov, that Lenny Rachitsky posted today. I heard Brian talk about a/b testing. But how do they identify the a’s and the b’s to compare? What is still unclear to me about product managers being redeployed as program mgrs or product marketing mgrs is… Who at Airbnb is talking directly with users to identify problems to be solved, and to understand their feelings about each of the problems? Who is summarizing those commonly heard problems and surveying each broad user audience to rank order those pains? Or, do they have some super high tech user pain & sentiment process by tracking Google searches or listening to users talk to themselves while using the product? Or, do they have a few people who know the users so well, they just guess fairly correctly? I’d love ve to know. #ProductManagement #Airbnb #UserResearch

These are exciting times. For Schibsted, and for me. In the next two weeks, Schibsted will receive 24 BNOK from the Adevinta sale and then split into two entities: Schibsted Media, under the sole ownership of the Tinius Trust, and Schibsted Marketplaces, a pure-play, focused marketplaces company. This shift achieves two things: It realises significant financial value for Schibsted’s owners, and sets up both new companies for future success, allowing them to carry forward Schibsted’s legacy of strong societal impact. This transformation is the result of many years of hard work by many - but also the culmination of a massive effort over the past year to make such a big change happen. It will also mean change for me. For the past five years, I have had the privilege of serving as the Head of Group Strategy & Corporate Affairs for Schibsted, working under Kristin Skogen Lund’s leadership with a dream management team and an ambitious Board. It has been immensely inspiring to work in a position where I can impact Schibsted’s direction, tackling strategic, organizational, and process-related problems of many kinds. I am very proud of our achievements. Schibsted is truly a unique company with exceptional people. Now, however, is the time to prepare for my next phase, as I have decided to leave Schibsted following the split. What’s next? It is both a strength and weakness that my profile is a bit hard to pin down: My experiences include being a leader, strategist, negotiator, advisor, board member and chair, board secretary, communicator, facilitator, and problem solver. There are many paths I could take: - Continue in the media industry, which I remain fascinated by? - Work with strategy in other industries, a core of many previous roles? - Return to consulting or advising, perhaps even start teaching? - Combine my orchestration skills to help run a bigger company in a COO role? - Become a strategically minded CFO or return to senior leadership, taking charge of a business again? - Enter private equity to help companies flourish? - Enter the public sector to have an impact there? -...? As you can tell, I am open to both career advice and career opportunities! Whatever I end up with: At 51, I believe I am at the start of what should be the most impactful decade of my professional career - old enough to have the experience to be truly effective, and young enough to still have the energy, ambition and drive to leverage that experience fully! It’s official. I’ll return to media! And not just to any media company. I’m coming home to Schibsted Media ✨ As a newly formed independent company, fully owned by Tinius Trust, Schibsted Media has a unique opportunity to shape its own long-term ambition & strategy and to tune its operating model to be an even stronger pure media player. And I get to support exactly that! 🚀 After a long summer break I will start as Senior Advisor to Siv, Schibsted Media’s CEO, and her management team. I was very determined to take a more strategic role after leaving Oda to support while I learn instead of diving straight into another operational leader role, and I was thrilled about getting this opportunity. There are several reasons for why this excites me so much. First of all, I love being in front of major formative shifts where I get to help outline long-term ambitions holistically while securing a fast and effective start towards it. Secondly, getting to work a mission that matters daily for people and colleagues who passionately care is really motivating. Finally, this places me right in the AI frontline, which speaks perfectly to the tech side of me. Alright. Ever had a moment when everything just clicks? For years, I knew deep down that my passion lay in product development, but the path to get there wasn’t always clear.
