Are the biggest conferences the most instructive? Not always. Tuesday reminded me once again of the value of small events. As part of their Digital Weeks, Landkreis Leer and Niedersachsen.ai organized an event worth experiencing: "#AI in Software #Technology and Beyond" by Prof. Dr. Niels Streekmann from the University of Emden/Leer. The talk was not just informative but truly engaging. The highlight, however, was the presentation by SeesDisease a local startup founded by two young innovators, Lorenz Rutkevich and his brother David Rutkevich, only 17 and 20 years old. They’re developing AI models that automate microscopy analyses, paving the way for faster, more precise diagnoses—something unique in Germany. My takeaway: Small local events can be not only entertaining but also incredibly eye-opening, showcasing raw innovative power without the overbranding often seen on big stages. What about you? 20 years ago I decided to move to Europe from North America to continue to pursue entrepreneurship. At the time, Cambridge, otherwise known as "Silicon Fen" or the "Cambridge Cluster", was where 70% of the venture capital in Europe was being deployed. As a result, the University of Cambridge felt like an obvious entry point for me. Fast forward 20 years and the entrepreneurial ecosystem across Europe has grown considerably - there are significantly more founders, investors and innovation spread across the continent. While gains have been made across the board, over the last 10 years, the biggest leaps forward have taken place in the UK, Germany and France. These countries have gone from accumulating low double-digit or even single-digit funding levels in the decade leading up to 2014 to attracting a combined $250B over the past 10 years — the UK even nears the $150B mark. Meanwhile, the tech headcount across Europe has grown 7x over that period. The growth trajectory of these countries illustrates the power of the flywheel effect: Europe’s first $B+ companies came from the UK, Germany, France and Sweden, paving the way for more funding, talent and billion-dollar companies to thrive. I'm proud to be European and exited by the opportunity over the next 20 years to leverage our strengths - diversity, deep tech, sustainability and financial services - to name a few - to ride the next wave of technological transformation, powered by artificial intelligence, solving real human problems.
