My takeaways for Sarasota County: -focus on high performing public schools and magnet school capacity in an innovation economy to create next generation of talent -ecosystem building to your assets; in Boulder it was AI -internships and mentorships; career pathways that bring talent back home -access to capital and VC connectivity -aligning with a regional tech strategy that plays on a larger hub, ie Boulder to Denver, Sarasota to Tampa/St Pete Good for the 2 young men on capitalizing on an opportunity, and for the support from the local ecosystem to build them up.

Do a startup internship and continue courses at Technical University of Munich. How do you plan your next steps when so much depends on “what if”? Are you a startup? Have you got enough interns on board? If not, listen up! Good interns are hard workers. Ask for proof? Many of them worked from 7 am to 7 pm everyday for IIT-JEE rat race. Pretty sure they can do 4 hours of work for you. Interns are the delightful mix of clumsiness and creativity that your team really needs. They might break a rule or two (or ten), but they can bring energy that almost matches that of a Founder. We have officially kicked off our Future Founders Program at StartHub Africa in conjunction with Makerere University and Makerere University College of Computing & Information Science (MAK Cocis). This program tackles a critical challenge: building a strong pipeline of startups that get to start from universities and sustainably grow. What sets this program apart? - Deep-Dive Internship: Participants will receive intensive support during their internships, refining ideas in areas like Founder-Market Fit, Problem Validation, MVP Development, Business Model Testing, and Team Building etc. - Learn-by-Doing Approach: Emphasizes practical, iterative problem-solving through problem-based and experiential learning. - Mentorship: Our Venture Associates who have been in trenches with startups and founders from our portfolio will be providing guidance, and what better way to learn than from experience. Addressing Concerns: You might wonder, "What about students' experience?" We understand students may lack domain expertise, business management skills, or the "perfect" team. However, there is always a starting point. Should I work for an established company, join a startup, or start my own business? 🤔 This is a question not just from National University of Singapore students but one that many of us face today. Earlier this week, SMARTR.CO had the pleasure of hosting 36 students and faculty from the National University of Singapore (NUS), ranked #1 in Asia by the latest QS World University Rankings. The students came from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, each with immense potential to become future leaders. I enjoyed sharing my journey—from working in the corporate world to launching my first business straight out of college, and finally founding SmartR after 15 years in the professional space. For those considering entrepreneurship, here are three key lessons from my own founder journey: 1️⃣ Know what’s expected of you – Understanding your role and the challenges ahead is critical. 2️⃣ Pivot or Persevere – Success often hinges on knowing when to stay the course or adapt. 3️⃣ People are our greatest asset – More than technology, innovation, or strategy, it's the people that drive success. Becoming a founder in HR tech has been the most challenging yet rewarding experience of my life. I hope my insights help guide students as they prepare for their future careers.
