Did you know America has a truck parking crisis? Every day, truck drivers face the growing challenge of finding safe, reliable parking. With over 3.5 million truck drivers in the U.S. and only 313,000 available parking spaces nationwide. That is only 1 authorized parking space for every 11 professional truck drivers on the road today. The gap is clear, and the impact is significant. ▫ Safety Risks: Drivers are forced to park in unsafe or unauthorized areas. ▫ Lost Productivity: Hours are wasted searching for parking, cutting into delivery schedules and increasing freight and logistics costs. ▫ Driver Well-Being: Lack of rest and proper facilities affects health and morale. At Leonard's, we recognize that solving this crisis requires collaboration. We’re advocating for investment in more truck parking infrastructure (the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act - a bipartisan bill in Congress would dedicate $755 million specifically for truck parking projects nationwide), technology-driven solutions for real-time parking availability, and industry partnerships to maximize existing resources. It's no surprise to those in the trucking industry that there's a shortage of truck parking in many areas. When I was driving, I remember it often taking around an hour to locate a parking spot in areas like Seattle and Portland. Furthermore, I'm a big white guy with army tattoos, meaning I rarely ever felt unsafe or unwelcome in an overnight location. If I was more concerned with psychosocial safety as many people are, parking would have been that much more difficult. Something a company can do to help its drivers is proactively identify safe parking locations along its routes. This doesn't mean dictating to drivers precisely where they can and can't stop - no one wants to be micromanaged like that - but it does mean not sending people out into the unknown and assuming the skill of finding safe parking is something they learned over the course of getting their license. Pre-identified and vetted overnight parking locations with services appropriate to your drivers is a great thing to do from a journey management perspective. It has numerous benefits, including: - Reducing drivers' stress and potentially boosting retention. - Improving efficiency by not having people waste time looking for spots. - Sends the message that the company cares for its drivers (and, again, potentially boosting retention). - Aligns well with the overall company's safety management system by reducing the likelihood of drivers exceeding their hours, encouraging safe parking habits, and reducing the chance of distracted driving as drivers search for parking. Anyways, even small companies can pre-identify parking spots for their drivers given how much information is freely available on the internet.
