Rupal Ismin’s Post

After nearly six transformative years, I’m saying goodbye to my role as the founding director of the Sydney Knowledge Hub. If now’s not a time to navel gaze, then when? It’s been a rewarding career challenge to take this empty, newly built space into a vibrant hub of activity that’s now part of the fabric of the University. Some of the highlights of my time at the Hub: ✨ The space itself – There’s a bit of magic here. The physical space has drawn an odd and wonderful crowd, and even on the crappiest days, it made work feel energizing. ✨ Bottom up projects -  I loved the challenge of finding pathways for new things in a necessarily bureaucratic organisation.   Big ups to Jed Austin, PhD and Elsa Darmalingum, who helped me on a major change maker for the uni’s support of commercialisation. ✨ PERIscope Commercialisation Award – This is the best commercialisation program in Australia.  Moving this from an idea to seeing the impact it has made on so many researchers through the work of Jane Cockburn (shout out to Bonnie Stanway) was hard and so fun.  ✨ My boss: It was an opportunity of a lifetime to work under Julie Cairney Thank you to those that enabled me and were big supporters of the hub: Duncan Ivison Eric Knight Sarah Lacroix Kirsten Andrews Paul Farran Alice Motion Steven Maguire Ali Abbas Girish Lakhwani Katie Richmond GAICD Stephen Bartlett Michael Milne Nicholas Haskins Brenda Hartley and 🧪 Joshua Ismin. These exceptional people I was so lucky to work under at the University of Sydney taught me that leadership is about identifying and championing the unique intelligence of the people around you.  The Hub is in great hands with an incredible team, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. And for those looking for their next challenge—keep an eye out.  This is one of the best roles at the University.   (I'll still be a member of the Sydney Knowledge Hub at my next stop at DeteQt https://lnkd.in/gsJd7nGz)

Huge Congratulations Rupal Ismin. You have built an incredible space, team, program of work, community and network. It is always a privilege to join the events and learn about emerging enterprises filling the seemingly small space at Sydney Knowledge Hub. Congratulations on an amazing legacy. You have the ability to define a vision, convince others to come on board and execute that vision. A rare combination. And you've been very fun to work with! I look forward to continuing to see your career thrive.

I can’t believe it has been 6 whole years!! Leaving a phenomenal legacy behind you🙌 I still remember walking through the unfinished space with a hard hat on wondering what this space would become - what a privilege to watch you define the vision and see it come to life over the years. Congrats and so excited for you!

Meeting you on my trip to Sydney was fairly transformative for me personally! The University of Aucklands version of the SKH was a few years behind your own at the time, but seeing your direction and what you had achieved despite the "necessarily beaurcratic organisation" pushed me to keep going, and enjoy the journey! All the very best
