Mind reading is inching closer to reality. Top image = what the monkey saw. Bottom image = What the AI reconstructed from brain activity. Researchers at Radboud University just developed an AI system capable of reconstructing remarkably accurate images of what someone is looking at. Based on their brain activity recordings. > The team used both fMRI scans of humans and direct electrode recordings from a macaque monkey to capture brain activity while viewing images. > An improved AI system learned which parts of the brain to focus on, significantly enhancing reconstruction accuracy. > Lead researcher Umut Güçlü claims these are "the closest, most accurate reconstructions" to date. My take: While the study has some limitations (like using images already in the dataset), this research is still mind-blowing. From helping stroke victims communicate to recreating dreams, we’re likely seeing the early innings of a tech that will have major applications in society as it continues to improve.
I wonder what the social, medical, and legal implications are of this research should it ever be perfected. Just thinking “sci-if,” could one day a scan of someone’s mind to objectively determine what that person saw be used in court testimony? Presuming this could be perfected, could this be more reliable than memory recall? Just fun to think about the possibilities!
Today, we learn to read the mind. Tomorrow, we are going to learn to write to the mind. Will this someday become a form of "real-life" entertainment? "Total Recall" here we come! (funny story, I went looking for Schwarzenegger and found this instead. I know what I'll be doing this weekend!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GljhR5rk5eY
The potential of mind-reading technology is truly fascinating! This is probably the closest, most accurate mind-reading accomplished with AI yet.
📌Day 4/100 3 AI Tools to Supercharge Your Productivity 🔸Glasp: Use ChatGPT and Claude to get summaries of YouTube videos and web articles. 🔸Brevian: Build custom AI agents and delegate your work without writing any code. 🔸Rapport: Create, animate, and deploy emotionally intelligent characters to enrich dialogue with your audience.
This is probably the closest, most accurate mind-reading accomplished with AI yet. It proves that reconstructed images are greatly improved when the AI learns which parts of the brain to pay attention to. Ultimately, it can create better brain implants for restoring vision.
Things that were once only science fiction can now become reality with AI.
What about our wondering and uncontrolled thoughts and imagination?
The people at Radboud University seem to be really on the ball 🔥
