Meta's Chief AI Scientist's advice to PhD students: ”There is no point working on LLMs”: During a talk at VivaTech2024 in Paris, Yann LeCun stated that he does not recommend students to work on LLMs. Yann views LLMs as an 'off-ramp' from the road to reaching ultimate intelligence. An off-ramp is thinking your new hammer will cut wood. We must remember LLMs' core function—they are next-word prediction tools trained to be conversational by imitating human responses. Therefore, it's hard to surpass human response accuracy and intelligence if LLMs are only trained on humans. As Yann states: ”You should work on the next generation of AI systems that lift the limitation of LLMs.” - - Video source: @tsarnick on X. - - if you found this post helpful! Just a day before Ken released this article https://lnkd.in/dhQtvAZ7 and I couldn't agree more. With the rise of AI, a lot of people (product owners, clients and developers) have forgotten the roots of Computer Science. Everyone wants a product to be developed ultra-fast, and with AI, and so AI has become the seasoning product lovers cannot get enough of, but contrast this to the hiring scenario, where, for a lot of engineers the following holds true - “I think they are just not interested in computer science any more. They’re not drawn to the ‘hardcore’ stuff like operating systems (OS), networking, and hardware,” declared Bagchi with a knowing nod. “The only reason algorithms still grab their attention is because those are the questions they’re still asked in interviews.” Nowadays, he shrugged, one doesn’t need to know the basics to land a job. “Who needs to know OS fundamentals to drop code on Github or run a programme on AWS?” & the surprising statistic on the state of AI Engineers - "The number of senior AI engineers in India is under 2,000, while the total active talent in the AI sector is about 21,000, per talent-solutions company Xpheno. It’s a far cry from Nasscom’s claimed figure of 650,000–700,000", which shows that to become the cream of AI engineering, computer science students need to keep their fundamentals close.
A BTech in AI may soon trump a BTech in CompSci as IITians' top choice
