What caught my eye was the name card holder on his desk, with the first card belonging to Wu Ying-Chun, the Chairperson of CommonWealth Magazine. Despite his advanced age, looking back on Professor Hsu's remarkable career as an academic and consultant to numerous companies, as well as his 20-year tenure as a judge for the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Award, I am filled with profound admiration. Be a winner Robert Beyster (founder of SAIC, starting with a $10,000 investment and now employs over 16,000 people) has some ethical advice for entrepreneurs on how to succeed and use good ethics within their organizations. He borrowed these tips from an unknown author. When a winner makes a mistake, he says, I was wrong, and I'Il fix it." When a loser makes a mistake, he says, "It wasn't my fault." A winner works smart and makes time to do the right thing. A loser is always "too busy" to do what is necessary. A winner makes commitments and keeps them. A loser makes promises and blows them. A winner respects those who are superior to him, and learns from them. A loser resents those who are superior to him, and tries to find fault with them. A winner feels ownership for more than his job. A loser says, "I only work here." A winner says, "There is a better way to do it." A loser says, "That's the way it's always been done here." A winner paces himself. A loser has only two speeds - hysterical and lethargic. Being a winner doesn't come easy. Being a loser requires no work at all.

I had a brilliant day yesterday (albeit a very cold one) at my first "FORE" Business meet of 2025 at Leamington Golf Club. ⛳ It was great to hear about some fantastic businesses, and witness some impressive shot-making from my playing partners Lewis Jenkins, Matthew Williams and Greg Bishop (who between them pipped me twice to nearest the pin prizes - as you can imagine I was thrilled for them on both occasions). One of the many topics we touched on during the day was when is the right time for businesses to look for investment to scale up, take that next step, and when to consider an exit. There's not a one-size fits all answer to those questions, which is why having the right advisers in place to help navigate those decisions and provide a picture of what certain outcomes might look like can be invaluable. Last year I became an award-nominated entrepreneur... The Speak Up Sis Awards were held in Augusta, GA and I attended the event as a top 5 nominee for the "Woman In Business" category. Reflecting on that experience this morning, I imagine how good it must have felt to win. One of my personal professional goals this year was to become an award-winning entrepreneur. Not because of bragging rights or because of applause but because of self-gratification. Somehow I convinced myself that "award-winning" was going to be the one thing that would assure me I was "qualified" for the career path I chose. A sense of imposter syndrome sometimes creeps up on the back of your neck, breathing ever so slightly, making you feel this unsettling cringe of doubt. Having this reflection helped me realize that I need to search within myself for self-gratification, regardless of how hungry I am for that win. Awarding-winning is surely significant but it does not define who I am, my capabilities, or my value. And when it happens, it will simply be a cherry on top of a very successful journey! The moral of the story is don't allow imposter syndrome to distract you from your purpose.
