Spotify is getting sued for underpaying royalties to songwriters & publishers. It's estimated they'll underpay by $150M this year. Here's how, why & what it means: --- 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁? Streams from bundles require a reduced mechanical royalty payment to songwriters & publishers in the US. So, Spotify got tricky... 1) they added audiobooks into premium tiers, 2) then quietly gave audiobooks a stand-alone tier, & 3) now claim Premium, Duo & Family tiers are bundles Reducing their mechanical payments by almost 50%. But the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) is suing, saying this is not a true bundle. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? We're seeing the beginnings of a new streaming era. After years of subscriber growth at all costs, it's time to get profitable. - Belts are tightening. - Shivs are out. - Enshittification is under way. But I have to wonder... Spotify spends so much energy trying to brand themselves as artist-friendly...is saving $150m/year really worth it? Or will no one really care? --- I'll go deeper into what streaming's new era will look like in this week's Where Music's Going. In the razor-thin margins of streaming, every cent matters
Also adding a 4) to the above: letting go of half of the team dedicated to advocating for songwriters and publishers 😓
I wish major labels would strong arm Spotify like they did Tik Tok
Music industry needs to take its power back, but decentralized into individual ownership and wealth generation
Didn’t suing Spotify become off the table when they agreed to negotiate the MMA? Also, suing the company that paid for your existence is the most music industry thing ever.
I left you a few messages and I'd love to get you on my podcast soon.
Daniel Ek, is a thief. I don’t know how many times I have to repeat this truth until people catch on. Shorted $150MM? Didn’t he just cash out $126MM recently to liquid cash? 🤷🏼
Everyday I learn something new about Spotify that makes me dislike them more
I was watching the Rick Beato interview with Ted Gioia and wonder if this is only the start of things to come. There certainly needs to be a better solution than the current Streaming solutions.
