Over the last year I have been advising founders and working with Rich Britton and Simon Kirby to help companies grow quicker through the Pivotal Venture Studio. I have loved every bit of it, with my passion being growing exciting new businesses and helping to support ambitious founders realise their potential. Earlier this year we merged with Impact Counsel (John Darling, Erim Jones and Roby Fok) a Lisbon based business with similar strengths, but focussed heavily on the tech enablement side. Creative Capital Ventures Group raised a $18 million fund to invest in tech and media Creative Capital Ventures (#CCV), a Lisbon and London-based venture studio, has launched a new #VC fund with an initial commitment of €18 million to invest in tech, digital media, and innovative consumer products. The fund aims to raise up to €50 million by the end of Q1 2025 and plans to deploy its first round of capital by the end of 2024, targeting 18 initial investments and 11 follow-on investments. Founders John D., Rich Britton, and Dominic Joseph are leading this initiative. John Darling expressed enthusiasm about the new venture, stating, "We are excited to launch our new fund. It will provide critical capital and help scale innovative startups. We aim to foster long-term success for ambitious entrepreneurs." Rich Britton highlighted the fund's focus on intellectual property, particularly in immersive entertainment and music rights, noting that these areas are ripe for growth and offer tremendous opportunities for reinventing how creators produce and consumers consume content. Dominic Joseph discussed how CCV's venture studio, Pivotal, will play a crucial role in accelerating startups with hands-on support covering everything from strategic planning to operational execution. The fund has secured investments from institutional and private investors, including Saratoga Capital Partners and Anthill Ventures. CCV's team has a strong track record, having impacted 150 startups, founded 20 companies, and achieved six exits between them. Focusing on high-growth sectors experiencing significant disruption—such as technology, digital media, sports tech, media and entertainment, and lifestyle (health and wellness)—CCV aims to build the next generation of market leaders. Venture Studios have a superpower that Venture Capital doesn't 🪄 They get to choose the founders of the startups they incubate. Studios bet on the horse and hand-pick the jockey - that's POWER 🏇 Yesterday I debated the merits of the Studio model with a very accomplished GP. He didn't like Studios, simply didn't believe in them... until I said one thing. This one concept might not have been enough to convince said investor to change his mind entirely about Studios, but he did have to hand it to me. "Good point" he said - "elaborate". Studio leaders know that investors are skeptical. They think Studios are unconventional, confusing, and unproven. And they're not wrong. But spewing a bunch of data about the success rates of studio-born startups or accelerated speed to market isn't going to assuage their fears - in fact, it's likely to make them more suspicious 🤨 What investors need is solid logic or as I like to say "make it make sense". You can do this in a variety of ways but this tactic was particularly compelling. I asked the investor what the most important criteria was for his investments and he said what I knew he would: the aptitude and capabilities of the founder. To which I replied, but you don't get to choose the founder. You might love an idea and see the market opportunity but if you don't like the founder, the investment goes nowhere. Studios get to choose the founders of the ventures they incubate. They strategically choose markets, systematically de-risk ideas, and evaluate dozens of founders to find the exact right fit. This, more than anything else, influences the ultimate success or failure of the venture.
