29.4.2024 Israel’s genocide-war of total destruction Nearly 37.5 million tons of conflict-generated debris are present throughout Gaza, with 3.2 million tons attributed to damaged roads, according to a preliminary joint analysis by UN-Habitat and UNEP, which integrates the findings of a UNOSAT Damage Assessment as of 29 February with building data as of May 2023. The analysis reveals a 63 per cent increase in the amount of debris present in Gaza as of 29 February, compared with just seven weeks prior on 7 January. The northern areas have suffered the largest scale of damage and destruction, with over 15 million tons of debris having accumulated in the Gaza governorate, nearly nine million in North Gaza and almost eight million in Khan Younis, followed by Deir al Balah (over 2 million tons) and Rafah (509,000 tons). UNMAS reports that much of this debris is laced with unexploded ordinance (UXO); while determining the exact amount of UXOs throughout Gaza is impossible, at least 10 per cent of ammunition fails to detonate when fired, UNMAS explains, estimating that up to 14 years might be required to clear all explosive threats and make Gaza safe again. https://lnkd.in/dzrzm9Tn

*Water Conflicts Have Risen 13x Since 2010 💧Water Conflicts Have Risen 13x Since 2010 What We’re Showing: This chart tracks the number of water violence incidents per year, as collected by the Pacific Institute’s Water Conflict Chronology database ℹ️ An incident is recorded when water resources are either a target, trigger, weapon, or casualty in a conflict. Key Takeaways Water-related violence is on the rise as wars—both civil and between states—have forces looking to control water sources or damage water infrastructure. In 2023 there were 248 verified instances of water conflicts, up from less than 20 in 2010. As active conflict zones (Yemen, Syria, Sudan, Russia-Ukraine, and Israel-Palestine) have increased, so too have intentional attacks on water systems, according to the Pacific Institute. Gaza faces the daunting task of clearing over 42 million tonnes of rubble left by the Israeli military campaign, with efforts just starting. The rubble contains bodies, unexploded bombs, and harmful materials, posing significant health risks and environmental damage. The United Nations estimates it could take 14 years to clear the debris, as the region struggles with limited resources and political uncertainty over future rebuilding efforts. Gaza Reduced to 42 Million Tonnes of Rubble. What Will It Take to Rebuild? After over a month and a half of analyzing and visualizing data from the UN and the World Bank, here's what we found: So far, Israeli air strikes have left more than 42 million tonnes of debris across the Gaza Strip, according to the UN. That’s enough rubble to fill a line of dump trucks stretching from New York to Singapore. Removing it all may take years and cost as much as $700 million. The task will be complicated by unexploded bombs, dangerous contaminants and human remains under the rubble. Imagine that in the upper part of the Dnister basin, rainfall of more than two and a half times the norm is recorded and continues for six days. Following these events, on the sixth day, the river floods the Soroca district overnight. A #flood would be ongoing in #Moldova. This is the proposed scenario for the table-top exercise (#TTX) taking place these days in Moldova, with the aim of testing the results achieved in almost four years of implementation in the entire thematic area of the #PPRDEast3 programme, funded by DG ECHO and aimed at strengthening risk #resilience in the Eastern region, including Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The programme's objectives are to build sustainable capacities of the partner countries' respective #civilprotection institutions for #disaster #risk #prevention, #preparedness and #response. The results of the TTXs will support the consortium to elaborate a detailed analysis of the Civil Protection System in each country which will feed into the revision of country-specific advisory documents. Those will detail the overall achievements and progress incurred in 4 years of implementation of the PPRD East 3 programme and will provide a #roadmap for the consolidation of sustainable results after the project end. In a new phenomenon, awareness campaigns have started to turn the tide in Yemen, where civilians hoarding weapons for personal gain are now handing over thousands of landmines to Project Masam. In an article published by Medium, we looked at how the economic deterioration and social needs in Yemen pushed families (at times with young toddlers) to gather and stockpile deadly landmines in their homes with the aim to sell them for a few dollars, or extract TNT or chemicals for other uses. Project Masam deminers, who have visited households across western and southern Yemen to retrieve stockpiled Houthi landmines, explained the explosive devices were found hoarded “in kitchens, sleeping places, and in courtyards”, which “increases the risk of their unintentional use”. Since 2023, however, our demining teams started recording an increase in the reporting of hoarded mines and their handover - tangible results of our Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) sessions, as Yemeni society’s understanding of the dangers of these weapons slowly shifts. https://lnkd.in/erWJwcKX #Yemen #Economic #Crisis #Civilians #Stockpiles #Weapons #landmines #ExplosiveOrdnance #EORE #MineAction #ProjectMasam #Awareness

This is my hometown in Syria. Every corner holds a memory, every street tells a story. My city endured relentless bombing from 2012 to 2019, during its time outside the regime’s control. When the destruction paused, a new tragedy began. The regime looted the homes, stripping away furniture, dismantling roofs for steel, and tearing up roads to extract sewage pipes. As an engineer, I learned how buildings are designed to withstand earthquakes and bad weather conditions. But nothing in my education prepared me for the thought that cities might need to survive a crime like this. My city stands as a heartbreaking testament to the Assad regime crimes across Syria. What is next? Many of you here in linkedin are engineers with more experience and more knowledge than me, you might know how to rebuild this quickly and any help and advice is really needed. But I am sure that Syria will come back, and Syria will find solutions to rebuild not just cities, but the lives and hope of those who call it home. #syria #hope

Mine action is chronically underfunded. Seventeen mine-affected countries (that have publicly available cost estimates) face a $115 million annual funding shortfall to meet land release commitments under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty within five years. However, the actual funding gap is likely much larger, as major contaminated states like Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Yemen lack detailed cost assessments. What can #MineAction do to bridge the gap? bit.ly/283-05 #JCWD 🇺🇸 📝 by Danielle Payne, Camille Wallen, & Chris Loughran
