The dawn of the Hybrid Quantum-Supercomputer era has begun. Today, Quantinuum and RIKEN announced a groundbreaking milestone: our trapped-ion quantum computer, Reimei (Japanese for “dawn”), is now linked with Fugaku, Japan’s famed supercomputer—marking the first fully operational hybrid system of its kind. This morning, RIKEN unveiled a state-of-the-art facility near Tokyo, purpose-built to house Reimei. Moving forward, this powerful collaboration will drive research into hybrid workflows and algorithms, unlocking transformative potential for the future of computing. We are delighted to provide exclusive access to our system for RIKEN’s researchers as part of a government-backed R&D program aimed at realizing the hybridization of quantum computers and supercomputers. The on-premises deployment of our ion-trap quantum computer—our first hardware installation outside the U.S.—further strengthens Japan’s dynamic quantum ecosystem. Following several high-profile U.S.-Japan technology collaborations in recent weeks, quantum computing was highlighted as a key area of bilateral cooperation during last week’s summit between President Trump and Prime Minister Ishiba. With Quantinuum’s U.S.-built quantum system now linked to RIKEN’s Fugaku, this collaboration represents the deep and enduring technological ties between our nations.
