This climate tech startup has raised $9 million to decarbonise the energy grid. Axle Energy is a London-based startup founded by Karl Bach and Archy de Berker. Back in 2023, the duo realised the energy grid was flooded with fossil fuels. During peak hours, fossil fuel companies made more money by supplying energy for excess demand. They wanted to change this. Kick fossil fuels out and replace them with clean energy assets. Axle Energy’s software connects EV, heat pump, renewables, battery assets to the grid to help balance out the power supply during peak hours. This way, clean asset owners can supply low-carbon electricity to the grid — while being paid to do so. It’s a win-win. By integrating their software with energy companies such as GivEnergy, myenergi, they enable these companies to reduce the customer’s energy bills by up to 25%. Imagine an energy grid run entirely on clean electricity and renewables 🌱⚡️ This is the bold vision Axle is working towards! Endeavour Energy (NSW) and EnergyLab are partnering with 10 leading clean energy start-ups to drive innovation and support the decarbonisation of the grid. Selected through EnergyLab’s Scaleup Program, these start-ups offer solutions in grid digitisation, advanced analytics, and distributed energy resource management. This marks the fourth year of Endeavour Energy's collaboration with EnergyLab, aiming to deliver smarter, cleaner energy systems. Leanne Pickering of Endeavour Energy highlighted the initiative's role in powering 2.7 million people across NSW. Orus Energy, founded by Théophile KARILA, Fanny Sauvée and Alexandre Girard, specializes in demand response technology, using buildings' thermal inertia to shift energy consumption to times when electricity is cheaper and greener. Their platform dynamically adjusts the energy usage of flexible assets such as heat pumps and thermostats, providing valuable flexibility to the grid without compromising occupant comfort. This innovative approach has already garnered attention from high-profile clients like IKEA and La Poste Immobilier. With the new funding, Orus Energy plans to expand its platform's reach, aiming to unlock 6 gigawatts of power demand flexibility in France by 2030. Their goal is to enhance grid resilience and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, contributing significantly to the energy transition. The company has already registered over 1 million m² of real estate space on its platform since its commercial launch in 2023.
