How can the U.S. plug more solar and #WindPower into the grid and meet fast-growing #ElectricityDemand when it doesn’t have enough power lines to handle all those tasks? The Biden administration is taking proactive steps to address this challenge by implementing a plan to increase the #GridCapacity for renewable energy sources. By investing in #GridInfrastructure and deploying advanced technologies, the administration aims to enhance the grid's efficiency and reliability while accelerating the transition to a clean energy future. The integration of more solar and wind power into the grid requires a comprehensive approach that considers factors like energy storage, grid flexibility, and cybersecurity. This initiative is not just about upgrading power lines; it's about transforming the way we generate, transmit, and consume energy! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gDshqr3D

I hosted our quarterly Energy Transition Dinner in Houston in June. Fascinating insight and opportunity to check in on what is top of mind for corporates, investors and advisors in the energy transition journey in the US. The over riding topic facing the US transition is power generation, and the grid upgrade (or lack of) as the greatest bottleneck, some interesting views on who might be your next power provider - read more in my latest paper as extended notes from the discussion. #energytransition #netzero

What is the U.S. Grid’s Biggest Bottleneck? The U.S. clean energy boom is being stalled by an unprecedented backlog—2,6 TW of solar, wind, and battery projects are stuck in the queue, waiting for grid connection. That’s twice the capacity of the entire U.S. electrical grid! Here’s what’s happening: 🔸 95% of the backlog consists of clean energy projects, with 1,080 GW of solar and 1,030 GW of storage leading the charge. 🔸 The interconnection queue has grown eight-fold over the last decade, with typical project wait times increasing from 3 years in 2015 to nearly 5 years in 2023. The big question is: How many of these projects will be built? Recently, DoE has announced a $2.2 billion investment in the nation’s grid across 18 states to protect against extreme weather threats and to expand grid capacity to meet the rising demand. But... ... $3.1 trillion is needed by 2030 (Rystad Energy). #cleanenergy #renewableenergy #grid #energytransition #sustainability #solar #wind #storage #infrastructure

Upgrading transmission infrastructure is crucial for addressing grid capacity challenges. Despite significant cost reductions in solar and wind energy, outdated transmission infrastructure remains a bottleneck. Enhancing transmission capacity can help integrate more renewable energy, alleviate grid constraints, and improve energy reliability, ultimately saving consumers money.

Local, On-Site Energy: A Key Solution to Grid Capacity Challenges Despite remarkable reductions in the cost of #solar and #wind energy—solar costs cut by half and wind by 75% in the last decade—the bottleneck remains our outdated #transmission infrastructure. According to experts like Lucas Davis from the University of California, Berkeley, Catherine Hausman from the University of Michigan, and Nancy L. Rose from MIT, the U.S. has seen a 27% increase in transmission capacity between 2005 and 2020, yet this expansion isn't enough to match the demand for #renewableenergy due to its uneven distribution. In my view, on-site clean energy generation is a pivotal strategy for addressing some of these transmission challenges. By localizing energy production, we can alleviate grid constraints and enhance energy reliability while saving consumers money. Did You Know? The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is reinforcing Order No. 2023, increasing accountability and penalties for transmission owners who fail to respond to interconnection requests in a timely manner. “For the last decade, Utilities have slow-walked interconnection applications and failed to make progress on their own, causing a massive, two-terawatt backlog of solar and storage assets waiting for permission to connect to the grid. These new rules will establish clear expectations for all parties involved in the interconnection process and outline consequences for inaction.” – CleanTechnica This is a huge step in the right direction.
