April 28th we unite in solidarity to commemorate the National Day of Mourning. This is a day dedicated to remembering and honoring workers who have lost their lives, suffered injuries, or experienced illness due to workplace incidents. This is also a day to collectively renew our commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace and to preventing further injuries, illnesses and fatalities. As we reflect on the significance of this day, we are reminded of the profound impact that loss and tragedy has on our lives, workplaces and communities. We remember the lives cut short, the dreams left unfulfilled, and the families forever changed. Behind each statistic, each story, is a human life, a family shattered, and a community affected. Every life lost is a tragedy that could have been prevented, and it is our collective responsibility to prevent future tragedies. Set aside a few minutes today to reflect on what you appreciate and are grateful for. Try it again tomorrow. 2. As many of you know, I’m from the Tampa Bay area, and we’ve all just lived through two back-to-back hurricanes. While my family and friends are safe, I’m deeply saddened for those in our own backyard who have lost so much. Reflecting on these recent experiences, it’s striking how many lessons can be applied to the principles of value-based care. 1. Preparation is Key Just as communities must prepare for a hurricane by strengthening infrastructure and creating response plans, healthcare systems need to invest in preventive measures and care coordination. By anticipating patient needs, we can mitigate crises before they escalate. 2. Collaboration Matters During the storm, I saw incredible teamwork among neighbors and emergency services. In value-based care, collaboration between providers, payers, patients, and families is essential for achieving better health outcomes. It’s about uniting efforts for a common goal: improving patient well-being. 3. Adaptability is Crucial Hurricanes can change paths unexpectedly, and we must adapt our strategies in real-time. Similarly, in healthcare, staying agile and responsive to patient feedback and evolving conditions ensures we deliver the best possible care. 4. Focus on the Whole Community After the storm, rebuilding efforts emphasized supporting the entire community, not just individual households. Value-based care embodies this holistic approach, prioritizing the health of populations rather than just individual transactions. 5. Heat is a silent killer. It kills more people each year than hurricanes, floods and tornadoes ... combined. For recent context: an estimated 2,300 people in the United States died from heat-related illness in 2023. That's 3X the annual average between 2004 and 2018 and researchers say those figures are probably undercounts. As storm Eowyn passes over Scotland (and other parts of the country) and schools in Angus are closed, I've had the flexibility to adjust my schedule and work from home to be with my children. One of the great things about being self-employed is the ability to manage my time and take care of my family when needed. However, it also brings to mind past experiences where my employer wasn't as understanding or supportive in similar situations. I’m particularly thinking of those in this situation today— juggling work and family commitments without the same level of flexibility. If an employer chooses to stay open and you don't feel safe attending work, you will lose out on a day's income, potentially. It’s been refreshing to see so many employers on social media announcing closures to ensure the safety of their employees. That said, it’s important to recognise the financial cost for employers when making such decisions. Paying staff when the business is closed for a day or two can be a significant strain, especially when there’s no income to balance it out. This leads me to think about the importance of having a clear policy in place for severe weather or other unexpected circumstances. Business owners, senior managers, and managers—do you have a policy around how these situations are handled? It's important for employees to know how these scenarios will be dealt with in advance, so they aren’t left uncertain in the event of a sudden closure. Clear communication and a proactive approach can help create a more supportive and understanding environment for everyone involved.
