In the fast-paced NHS environment, cultivating a culture of civility and respect isn't just a nicety—it's a necessity. Recently led a workshop on Civility & Professional Behaviours Training, drawing insights from the Ockendon and East Kent reports. It's imperative we recognize the impact of incivility on staff wellbeing, patient care, and organizational efficacy. Together, we explored communication strategies to challenge disrespectful behaviors and promote a culture of kindness and collaboration. ✨ Over the past 18 months, I’ve had the privilege of leading my Trust’s Pharmacy Staff Survey Group, working tirelessly to make meaningful changes in our workplace. From creating a culture of psychological safety to ensuring our actions genuinely reflect our values, it’s been inspiring to see how collective efforts drive transformation. With the NHS National Staff Survey closing last month and the year drawing to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on last year’s results and the progress we’ve made: 💬 2023 Insights: Improved Scores: Staff highlighted better appreciation, recognition, and a sense of belonging Learning & Development: A focus on continual growth has strengthened team bonds. Real Actions: Feedback wasn’t just heard—it is acted upon, reaffirming our commitment to being a department that listens, acts and delivers. As someone deeply invested in improving workplace processes and wellbeing, I’m proud of the strides we’ve made. But there’s always more to do.  The road ahead is about continuing to listen, act on feedback and being persistent in ensuring every voice continues to feel valued and heard. A fundamental value of care is really listening to the voice of individuals and putting them at the heart of decision-making. This is not just to provide evidence for an inspection, but because it is the right thing to do. NAPC held a really lively engagement session with members on ‘activation’ on 3 July discussing four questions in breakout groups. A positive change in activation for a person/patient can lead to positive changes in self-care behaviours which improves health and care outcomes and reduces demand on the healthcare system. Activated staff are more innovative in the workplace and attentive to their own health and wellbeing for the benefit of themselves, their patients and colleagues. Some of the ideas that were discussed were around the impact of personal circumstances or the diagnosis of a long term health condition on a person’s activation and also how people can be activated through a 'call to action' or a ‘nudge’ in their behaviour. Healthcare professionals can become more activated at work through helping patients as well as through having a good culture and leadership, supportive colleagues, constructive feedback and a simple thank you - which can all make a difference to everyone. Just spent two days with some #NurseLeaders at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust We spent some time exploring #PsychologicalSafety and #SpeakUpCulture This is an exercise we ran with the participants and I was surprised at the conversation that occurred as a result It sparked some of the most profound conversations about leadership, trust, and safety in healthcare teams. The prompt was simple yet deeply revealing: “I feel psychologically safe when my leader/colleague _____.” This exercise generated raw, honest reflections—illuminating what truly makes people feel valued, heard, and secure in their workplace. Responses ranged from: “…listens without judgment.” “…acknowledges my ideas, even if they don’t agree.” “…supports me when I make a mistake rather than blame.” And two themes stood out: 1. Inclusion – People feel safe when they are heard, respected, and valued. Simple actions like listening, advocating for others, and checking in build a culture where teams thrive. 2. Trust – Psychological safety isn’t just about kindness; it’s about creating an environment where people can speak up without fear. Clarity, honesty, and autonomy were highlighted as essential for people to feel confident in contributing. Psychological safety isn’t a “nice-to-have”; it’s fundamental to patient safety, staff retention, and effective teamwork. For those leading in healthcare (or any sector), I encourage you to try this with your teams. You might be surprised at what you learn. In 2018, the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (JOEM) published three articles, each purporting to measure ‘Culture of Health’ in the workplace. But did they? My colleague and I didn’t think so. So, we wrote a letter to the editor, which was published in 2019. We made the case that while these research teams were measuring elements of the workplace culture of health, it wasn’t culture itself that was being measured. If you subscribe to Webster’s dictionary being a reputable source for definitions, then you’ll likely agree that culture is the shared behaviors, beliefs and attitudes of a group of people. Measuring culture therefore requires knowing the perceptions of those within the culture. Fast forward to 2024 and I find myself referencing ‘Well-Being Culture’ much more often than ‘Culture of Health’. Regardless, I still use the same definition of culture in our work at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Do you agree with definition above? If not, how do you define culture of health / well-being culture?
