The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the selection of 15 additional drugs for Medicare price negotiations in advance of the expected February 1st deadline. According to the final guidance for the second cycle of the Drug Price Negotiation Program (DPNP), organizations with a selected drug have until February 28, 2025, to decide if they will participate in negotiations, and any negotiated prices will become effective in 2027. While this is a significant step forward, there is a perception that the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) might be repealed under the new administration. However, several countervailing forces should be considered: • IRA Savings: If repealed, billions would be required to offset the lost savings hoped for under the IRA. • Potential Reforms: Any reforms to the IRA may introduce international price referencing to the DPNP.
