With rising waiting lists, system-wide workforce challenges and significant financial constraints, the NHS is facing the most severe pressures in its history. In this error-provoking context, it is essential we don’t overlook patient safety; preventing avoidable harm is now as important as ever. At this critical moment, we are partnering with Public Policy Projects to deliver a new programme of work with the aim of embedding patient safety as a core priority across national and local health systems. The programme, Harnessing technology to enable a system wide approach to patient safety, will bring together health system leaders, industry experts and patient/end-user representatives to discuss patient safety through the lens of technology, digital innovation and data-driven transformation. Data is the backbone of patient safety in healthcare. Without it, hospitals are left to guess where gaps in care might exist, and the consequences can be severe. As revealed in "Forging a Safer Future: India's Blueprint for Patient Safety Excellence," healthcare professionals across the board—nurses, doctors, and administrators—are calling for better data collection to identify risks, enhance safety protocols, and drive continuous improvement. Sharing few excerpts from the study Nurses are at the front lines of care, and they often face the challenge of balancing efficiency with safety. A nurse from a medium-sized hospital in Mumbai noted, "The workload is overwhelming, and it affects both patient outcomes and our well-being. Accurate data on patient safety incidents is crucial to identifying gaps in care and making necessary improvements." With limited resources for reporting, nurses emphasize the need for streamlined systems that allow them to report safety issues quickly and without added stress. Doctors echo the need for more robust safety data. A senior doctor from a government hospital in Delhi pointed out, "With less data at hand, we have no scope for improvement. Continuous tracking of safety measures is essential to refining our practices and improving care quality." For hospital administrators, data isn’t just useful—it’s essential for making informed decisions. One administrator stressed, "Without accurate data on adverse events and safety incidents, it's impossible to implement effective patient safety strategies. Data helps us pinpoint where we are falling short and guides us in how to correct it." The report outlines critical steps for improving data collection in healthcare: 1. Encourage Adverse Event Reporting: Hospitals need user-friendly digital systems to report incidents quickly and accurately. Encouraging a culture of open reporting will ensure safety issues are addressed without fear of blame. 2. Integrate Technology for Seamless Data Collection: Provide hospitals with the tools needed for comprehensive data tracking, analysis, and proactive safety management. The Role of Medblaze QMIS Medblaze QMIS is leading the charge in transforming healthcare safety by offering real-time data collection and analysis on incidents, risks, and compliance. 🌍 Patient Safety: A Global Priority at ESNO Brussels Opening by Penilla Gunther Today at the ESNO event in Brussels, we had the privilege of hearing Penilla Gunther president of European Patient Safety Foundation (EUPSF) deliver a thought-provoking opening speech on the critical importance of patient safety in healthcare. Her insights not only highlighted alarming statistics but also inspired a call to action for everyone in the healthcare field. 💡 Key Takeaways: 30% of global health spending is linked to avoidable harm. By reducing harm, we could reinvest in improving care systems. Medication errors, delayed referrals, and system inefficiencies account for over 90% of harm in healthcare. Each year, more than 400,000 individuals globally sustain permanent disabilities due to preventable harm, according to WHO data. Penilla shared her personal story as a heart transplant recipient, emphasizing the challenges of lifelong medication adherence and the human side of healthcare. Her message underscored the role of empathy, leadership, and strict adherence to protocols in fostering a culture of safety. 🏥 Why It Matters: Patient safety is not just about following rules—it’s about recognizing that our actions as healthcare professionals can mean the difference between life and death. Every interaction, every routine, and every decision counts. 🔗 A Call to Action: Whether you're a nurse, a physician, or part of the support system, Penilla’s speech reminds us of the shared responsibility we hold in creating a safer, patient-centered healthcare environment. Keep the broader picture in mind. Let’s continue this conversation: How can we collectively improve adherence to safety protocols? What innovative strategies have you seen or implemented to reduce harm in your practice? Together, we can ensure that safety isn’t just a checkbox—it’s a commitment to better care. #PatientSafety #ESNO2025 #HealthcareLeadership #GlobalHealth #MedicationSafety #EmpathyInHealthcare

The Government has just launched a rallying cry to the public and NHS staff to share their view and experiences to fix the NHS. 👇 https://lnkd.in/e_CiN3pK New laws are set to be introduced to make NHS patient health records available across all NHS trusts, GP surgeries and ambulance services in England – speeding up patient care, reducing repeat medical tests, and minimising medication errors. Systems will be able to share data more easily, saving NHS staff an estimated 140,000 hours of NHS staffs’ time every year, because staff will have quicker access to patient data, saving time that can then be spent face-to-face with patients who need it most and potentially saving lives. This all sounds great, but in reality how easy is this to achieve and what needs to be done to make this happen? Another step in the right direction is detailed in the article below 👇 which highlights two reviews exploring patient safety within the health system, with a view to making recommendations on whether a different approach could offer improvements; and secondly focusing on quality and governance. So what does it mean by focusing on Quality? It could mean a number of things in healthcare, but specifically for tech good quality software will ensure business objectives are achieved. Therefore, an approach to Quality Assurance and testing needs to focus on, but not limited to the below characteristics. 🤓 Usability: The system should be user-friendly, allowing both healthcare professionals and patients to use it easily without extensive training. 🤝 Interoperability: Health tech should be able to seamlessly integrate and communicate with other systems and devices, facilitating data sharing and collaboration. 🔐 Data Security and Privacy: Protecting sensitive health information is crucial, so strong security measures and compliance with regulations are essential. 🏎️ Reliability: The technology should perform consistently over time, minimizing downtime and errors. 📈 Scalability: The ability to adapt and expand as healthcare needs evolve, accommodating more users or integrating new features. By using automation you can overcome capability and capacity challenges whilst increasing speed and accuracy. What else would you include into a Quality Assurance strategy in healthcare? #qualityassurance #nhsinnovation #saveournhs #testautomation
