What's the secret to making New Zealand's mission-oriented research more impactful and relevant to community needs? The answer lies in collaboration and inclusivity – an approach that can be met by embedding Māori values in research design. An independent review of by NZ Institute of Economic Research analysed the 8 years of our research. The review offers five lessons for the future of science and science funding in Aotearoa: 1. Empower collaboration: Strong, interdisciplinary networks with varied perspectives enrich the research, are better connected with communities, and offer long-term benefits outside the project. 2. Be flexible: Allow researchers to adapt their projects in response to community feedback and evolving needs. 3. Develop new metrics for success: Traditional metrics such as peer-reviewed publications don’t capture all the value. We need new measures of research success built into research designs. Fund for the cost of trust-building: Allow for the significant time and resources required to build networks and trust in research budgets. Independent researchers add value: Independent researchers providing critical insights and maintaining the integrity of mission-oriented research. Happy to share a great collaborative work with Matías Ramirez, Robert Byrne, Imogen Wade on How does transformative innovation policy travel across physical and cognitive spaces, published in Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions. Our insights are based on three policy engagements developed through Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) with Vinnova Climate-KIC SANBI and the Department of Science and Innovation in South Africa. Big thanks to all the participants! We argue that this paper contributes to the understanding of the spatiality of transitions in the policy area by incorporating insights from the policy mobility literature. Also, multi-scalar policy approaches to transformative innovation can be effective when combined with the construction of “fluid spaces” in which different professionals from academia, policymakers, and industry stakeholders engage together. Publishing internationally goes beyond just visibility—it cements your presence in the global research community. Here's why it matters: 1. **Intellectual Contribution**: International publications integrate your research into global discourse, fostering innovation through diverse perspectives and methodologies. 2. **Cross-Cultural Collaboration**: Recognition leads to collaborations with researchers from various backgrounds, enriching research outcomes with new theories and techniques. 3. **Enhanced Credibility**: Publishing in international journals establishes high scientific standards, enhancing your credibility and validating your work globally. 4. **Impact on Policy**: Global research can influence policies and practices worldwide, shaping healthcare, education, and technology on a larger scale. 5. **Broader Citations**: International reach boosts citations, expanding your research's influence across diverse contexts. 6. **Career Opportunities**: International exposure enhances career prospects, attracting funding and positioning you as a thought leader in your field. 7. **Addressing Global Challenges**: International research tackles global issues, such as climate change and healthcare disparities, making your work relevant on a global scale. Engage in international discourse to amplify your research's impact worldwide. All of these benefits continue even after your passing away. #Research #GlobalImpact #AcademicPublishing

Dr Marconi Albuquerque from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation in Brazil quotes OECD (2023) declaring 'transdisciplinary research to become the dominant mode of research in order to achieve societal impact and change'. The major Brazilian research funder, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development - CNPq, has already restructured their funding models to an extent. I'm wondering whether more funders across the globe will assess the OECD report and if it will have an effect on the funding schemes in a larger scale. Maybe this has already happened a bit? #ITD24 #interdisciplinarity #interdisciplinary #transdisciplinary #transdisciplinarity

Sharing on behalf of research impact: Kia ora koutou, Please join us for our next instalment in the Research Impact for Public Good webinar series, The research is clear, why aren't things changing? with science communicator Ceridwyn Roberts. The webinar will be held online on Wednesday 16 October, 12pm-1pm NZDT. There is a common belief that if someone truly understands scientific findings and the consequent impact on humanity, they will immediately change their behaviour. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. When science is "mission-led" or a collaborative, transdisciplinary, multi-organisational approach to solving ‘big picture’ problems, how do we go about creating impact? This webinar will look at mission-led science communication and engagement and how it goes beyond explaining research, instead aiming to help people respond to science with meaningful action. Using her recent report for the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor as a starting point, Ceridwyn will explore best practice of the communication and engagement involved in mission-led science across the Aotearoa New Zealand science system.
