A few days ago, our workflow orchestration tool underwent an upgrade. While the upgrade was communicated well in advance and happened smoothly, we discovered afterward that our alerting systems were rendered non-functional. This could have had significant implications, as alerts are typically triggered when something goes wrong. If alerts fail to fire, teams might remain unaware of critical failures. Fortunately, in our case, we had a backup mechanism: an additional set of alerts triggered upon the successful completion of our daily data loads. When these success alerts didn't fire, it immediately alerted us to the issue, allowing us to fix it promptly. This incident made me reflect: What proactive strategies or techniques do other teams use to mitigate such risks in production systems?
